A message from Deacon Victoria:

We’re often told by preachers and theologians that God is already at work, all we have to do is join Him*.

When I think about God’s work, I tend to think in terms of great acts. You know, something along the line of parting the Red Sea. But the reality of God’s work is that it’s in the ordinary. God reveals Himself in the everyday acts of love and challenges. That’s where we’ll find His invitation to join Him. On Wednesday, some of us heard stories about Anne Reed’s gift of hospitality. She loved to bring family and friends together to share stories and eat the fabulous food that she prepared. God’s work is about love, relationships, building one another up, forgiveness, listening, and presence. Anne Reed joined in with God’s love work with great gusto. Who knew that a family dinner could be God’s work?

In his sermon last Sunday, Fr. Ben expressed the hope that we may “always be open to God’s mundane, inane, supremely sensible and always surprising work among us.” Where is God in our ordinary routines? How do you express God’s love in your ordinary encounters with other people? How do we invite them to experience God’s love through our own interaction with them? St. Benedict considered work to be a form of prayer. The work of cooking, cleaning, growing vegetables, scouring floors are all forms of prayer. They are offerings to God because our work is an offering to serve one another, to make life more enjoyable and to offer encouragement when life just seems too difficult to bear. Our ordinary work and activities may seem insignificant, but they do contribute to God’s work of reconciliation and redemption in the world.

Thanks be to God,
Deacon Victoria

*I’ve always liked the old-fashioned practice of using the capitalized pronoun when referring to God.

Community Notices and Activities
On the first day of school, students will be welcomed back with friendly counselors at their school. Austin ISD’s goal is to have counselors visible so students know who to talk to as they transition back to on-campus learning.
Rebels For Humanity and Me'Yer Deus Foundation are two non-profit organizations that serve the needs of the community – food insecurity and student mentorship. They have come together to give 300 (150 Elementary 150 Middle School) students the basic school supplies in hopes of starting them off to a successful school year. There will be a library for students to choose books of their choice. Free clothing give away. We will have music and live performances from the Founder/CEO of Rebels For Humanity Kay Jay SD1.
