The Bishop is Coming this Sunday,

October 9th

11:00 AM

The Bishop will be at St. John’s on Sunday, October 9^th. The bilingual service will begin at 11:oo AM. Reception will follow after the service.

Attention Volunteers: 

We are in need of volunteers to help with the set up and clean up for the Bishop’s Reception on October 9

The 1 PM ladies are providing the main dishes, and we are in need of the following:

1.     Fruit Trays

2.     Cheese and Crackers

3.     Deviled Eggs

4.     Desserts

Hello Fellow Gardeners – Because of some health issues I will no longer be able to participate as much in the garden as I have in the past. Below is a list of tasks that Hal and I will need extra help with. We would like to discuss this at our next workday which will be this Saturday, Oct. 8 starting around 8AM. Please let us know if you can attend. Thanks.

Oppose Chapter 313 Corporate Giveaways

Please sign (and share) CTI's Sign Up Take Charge Petition Against Chapter 313 Deals

As a supporter of Texas public schools and as a taxpayer, I oppose all school districts giving property tax breaks to major corporations under the state's failed Chapter 313 program.  Small businesses and ordinary taxpayers have to foot the bill when companies are given school district tax giveaways. Chapter 313 takes $1 Billion in taxpayer dollars each year and gives it to major oil, gas, energy and manufacturing companies, money which could be going to public schools.  The program was not re-authorized last legislative session due to bi-partisan opposition of legislators, the Texas IAF, and allies. 

Chapter 313, which will end December of 2022, should not be revived by the legislature, and school districts (governed by elected school board members) should refuse to grant any more of these corporate tax exemptions this year.  Since the current program will end in December 2022, there has been a rush of over 500 applications from Major Oil, Gas, Energy and Manufacturing Companies for over $10 Billion in school tax breaks.

By signing up, I pledge to hold candidates and elected representatives accountable to opposing Chapter 313 at the school district and state levels.

A few members of our church have been helping a young man who was homeless. We’re very happy that he is moving into a new apartment in about 2 weeks. We are helping him with some things for his new apartment. We already found a couch, kitchen items (dishes, silverware, pots, and pans), and a kitchen table and chairs  

We could use your help with getting a few more things for his new home. We're still searching for a dresser, bed (full or queen), sheets, bedspread, blanket, bath towel set, kitchen towels, hangers, 2 bar stools, and other things to make his new apartment feel like home. He would also like a tv and laptop. His favorite colors are blue and black. 

Cash donations will be converted into a Walmart gift card to shop for any other items he needs. Please designate "Darius" on your donation. We will also need access to a truck to move the furniture items.

JAMAICA! — Saturday, October 15th from 10 am to 5pm. Prepare to share your talents and your dollars in a day of fun for all the family.

Help Needed for Jamaica Cakewalk

We are in need of donations of cakes and cookies for the cakewalk at the Jamaica on Oct 15th. If you are bringing cookies, please package them in bags with 6 cookies per package. We will be giving cakes to adult winners and bags of cookies to child winners.

Pulpit Announcement

Leaders at St. John's and Central Texas Interfaith are working to promote a broad agenda of issues important to families in our community this election. On Sunday October 16^th at 3 PM CTI will be hosting a Take Charge Travis County Accountability Session at Huston-Tillotson University Chapel, where local candidates will be asked to respond to our agenda. Major candidates for Mayor, City Council, and 2 AISD Board seats are being invited. HT’s King-Seabrook Chapel is at 900 Chicon St, and parking is available in the HT Parking lot along Chalmers and along Chalmers Street itself. Remember, 3pm Sunday October 16th at Huston-Tillotson Chapel.

WALK THROUGH THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS with Fr David Beer

During our classes we will briefly look at every book in the Old and New Testaments. We’ll consider the origins of these books and the purposes of their authors. We’ll look at how the Bible is arranged and the kinds of literatures it contains. Also, we will enumerate the major themes of the books and how these are meaningful to us today as Christians.  Be sure to bring your Bible (any translation) to class.

Daughters of the King Installation

October 23rd

St. John’s Woman at the Well Chapter of the Daughters of the King will install four new members on Sunday, October 23^rd at the 11am and 1pm services. If you are interested in learning more about the Daughters of the King contact Lisa Shirah-Hiers.

St. John’s will hold our annual talent show on Sunday, October 23^rd at 6pm in the church sanctuary.
