September 5, 2018
Welcome to The Bridge, a weekly update of the Rappahannock River District of the United Methodist Church
Ministry Partnership: Together in Disciple Making (part 6)
"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor." Ecclesiastes 4:9 (part 5)

Let’s Never Forget

Let us Never Forget that the most effective form of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ requires a personal touch. Reaching un-churched people in a way that leads to disciple making requires that you get out of the building, stop relying on worship, and stop waiting for people to come to you/your church.

The second most effective tool in this day and age is the initial cyber connection. We'll be learning more about the Discipleship resources on September 29 th and October 5-6 th . Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten or have not marked these important dates on your calendar!

On September 29 we’ll have our Discipleship Making Fair at Trinity King George from 10:00am - 12:00 noon, with free resources, door prizes, resources to purchase, and more. On Oct. 5-6 we’ll have our Lay Servant classes at Regester Chapel including the advanced class on Disciple Making. Every congregation should be sending at least two people to the advanced class!

You don't have to be on the Lay Servant track to register for this or any Lay Servant training class .

Dr. Junius Dotson, the Discipleship Ministries General Secretary shares this very important information:

Most people who visit churches “visit” the church’s website first. That’s how the outside world visits the church world before they ever step into the door. They want to know what to expect before they come. On your website, include these pieces of information:
   A hearty welcome from your pastor;
   Leadership information, including staff pictures and email addresses;
   Why you exist;
   What visitors can expect to see and hear while with you for worship or ministry events;
   When and where church meets, with clear directions on parking;
   Lots of pictures showing your church in action updated regularly;
   How to request prayer & a regularly updated prayer list;
   An explanation of the gospel;"

What? You don’t have a website? No problem. No matter how large or small your church is, you can have a good effective website. The RRD District, the Virginia Conference Communications office, or the denominational Communications office can help your church create a high quality website and improve your cyber presence.

Friends, Isn’t it time we stop doing the same things expecting different results? But we can’t make disciples without committing time to a different way of reaching God’s people!

See you on September 29 th at Trinity UMC at 9425 King's Highway, King George from 10:00am - 12:00pm.

Pastor Ted

2018 Fall Events will Combine District Conference & Charge Conferences with Praise & Celebration

District Celebrations are three regional events that will combine conducting district conference business, charge conference business, and a significantly greater amount of time to worship, praise, fellowship, and celebration of all God has done through our district from 2011 to 2018.

Each event will be coordinated by a Lead Lay and Clergy team. At each location we will experience a gathering featuring the most special worship and praise event possible. The event will be from 2:30pm - 4:30pm and will include light refreshments. The two business portions (district and charge conference) will occur early in the event followed by praise and celebration.

The dates and locations are:

October 21 st  – Fredericksburg/Stafford Region held at Ebenezer Stafford

October 28 th  – Southern Region held at Wright’s Chapel UMC

November 4 th  – Northern Neck Region held at Heathsville UMC

Each church will still prepare and bring copies of all the normal reports and have copies for their members; election of nominated Annual Conference delegates and General/Jurisdictional Conferences will still take place as well as other normal district and church business. The business sessions will be like the cluster charge conference we have previously conducted.

Why do this?  Because the District Council wants to place an emphasis this fall on ministries, praise, fellowship, and how God has used our district over the last seven years. It’s a direct response to the feedback from the last seven years of hearing, “do less business and more worship!”
