Welcome to The Bridge, a weekly update of the Rappahannock River District of the United Methodist Church
Ministry Partnership: Together in Disciple Making (part 3)

"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor."
Ecclesiastes 4:9

Every time I’ve ever been present when Dr. Cynthia Wilson shared her talent, it’s been an amazing experience! This was the case on the three occasions Dr. Wilson joined us at sessions of the Virginia Conference, it was a moving experience when she led music and sang at the Pastor’s Convocation in January of 2016, and her music nearly brought me to tears (of joy) when she sang at the Appreciation and Retirement luncheon for Mrs. Molly Steward, the Gulfside Retreat Center Director.

The thing that makes two better than one in a partnership with Discipleship Ministries is our access and the availability of very gifted Christian servants. If you haven’t caught on by now, the Rappahannock River District is working closely with the General Board of Discipleship Ministries to provide tools, training, and equipping in Intentional Disciple Making.  Yes, making disciples is a request and vision adopted by the Virginia Conference, but we are in this partnership because the time for getting more focused and more serious about making disciples of Jesus Christ is long overdue!

The thing that excites me most about our partnership with Discipleship Ministries is the opportunity to engage in training, equipping, and deeper learning led by experts and specialists like Dr. Cynthia Wilson. So, friends, it’s my great pleasure to introduce you to Dr. Wilson, who serves as the Associate General Secretary of Leadership Ministries. The first group scheduled to benefit from Dr. Wilson’s talents and gifts will be the RRD Clergy. Dr. Wilson will lead the clergy during our Wednesday, November 7th meeting at Wright's Chapel UMC centered on “ Creative Worship.” The clergy will gather at 9 am, engage in the session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, have a Q&A lunch, and those who have flexibility in their day can spend more time in discussion with Dr. Wilson in the afternoon. The Creative worship time will include worship related aspects like music, preaching, liturgy, and more. This November gathering will be interactive, spiritually uplifting, and fun. Clergy – Our time with Dr. Wilson is a fantastic opportunity you won’t want to miss!

Rev. Dr. Cynthia A. Wilson became Associate General Secretary of the Leadership Ministries unit in February 2017. She is an ordained deacon under extension ministry appointment in the Great Plains Annual Conference. Prior to joining the Discipleship Ministries staff, Wilson served as Assistant Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students at Garrett–Evangelical Theological Seminary. At Garrett-Evangelical, Wilson launched the Center for Music and Worship in the Black Church Experience, a one-of-a-kind North American institute that provides training in the sacred music of the black church and beyond to musicians and worship leaders.
