Coffee and Convos

Franklin Center's Coffee and Convo events provide a fun way to get to know other parents or caregivers in our community. Held on the second Friday of each month after drop off (around 8am), parents and guests can stop in for coffee and breakfast treats (often made by our students in the culinary science class) to mingle and get to know one another better. Events are held in our beautiful community room at Franklin Center. Come join us!

Special Person's Day

A huge thank you to all who attended Special Person's Day. It was a pleasure to see so many faces and to be able to share our new space together. Together, we raised $701.00 for the Golden Valley Fire Relief Association.

Classroom Highlight: Highschool Economics

By Kelly Crampton

In Economics, students have been working through several Microeconomics units in the first part of the school year. We have just finished a unit on Market Structures. Throughout this unit, students spent time learning about the four main market structures and identifying real world examples of those. Recently, students participated in a game of Oligopoly. In this game, students took on the role of a firm and competed against other students' firms by either choosing to advertise or price drop. Each round, students were able to see how the decisions of other firms impacted their own success as a business. After winter break, we will be moving into Macroeconomics.

No School on December 16th

Franklin’s Board of Trustees has approved closing both the Academy and Therapy Services on Friday, December 16th. This was previously scheduled as a half day, but the Board took the opportunity to say thank you to the dedicated staff by giving them a full day off prior to the break. There will be no Activity Days or Owls’ Nest on Friday, 12/16, but we will reopen for Activity Days and Therapy services on Monday, December 19. The rest of the holiday schedule remains the same.

Letters From Leaders

Kim Strandemo, Franklin Academy Principal

A huge thank you to the Franklin Academy Community for the job well done during last month's accreditation visit with MNSAA. The massive project would not have gone as well as it did without everyone’s participation and hard work.

We kicked off the process with the leadership teams and half of the Board of Directors welcoming the team to our campus for a tour and a get-to-know-you dinner. We learned a little bit about them and their job on campus for their two days and they learned all about us. The next morning we had the other half of the board and the teachers for a welcome breakfast. Over the next day and a half, the students did a great job welcoming the MNSAA team into their classrooms. Thank you to the parents, for talking with them during driveline, and teachers, BTs, and leadership staff who were open and honest with where our school is during their one-on-one interviews. Everything went so well that the team leader came to me the second morning and asked to move up our final meeting as the visit went so well that they finished early. In all the years that the team leader had been doing these visits, we ranked right there at the top!

What we learned from the visit is that we were spot on with what we need to work on in the next few years. Our Franklin Academy Strategic Plan is comprehensive and matches the work in our self-study. There were no surprises, which is exactly what we wanted. We know what we need to do; now it’s time to get to work and work toward our goals. I am so grateful to be surrounded by such talent and hard work. Attached here you will find the highlights of the visit and the recommendations they have for us.

In the handbook, the months are incorrect for when we send out our WIPPs. “The Whole Learning Individual Program Plans (WIPP) are issued in November and June” should read "February and June." Sorry for any confusion that this may have caused. We will make sure it gets corrected in the next handbook.

Attention all 11th and 12th grade families: If you are interested in signing your child up to take the ACT this Spring, please reach out to Mikki Lucci at [email protected]

I hope to see many of you at tomorrow’s Coffee and Convo or the gathering at Danny and Steve’s. If I don’t get to see you before the holidays, please have a blessed break and I will see you back here in 2023!

Happy Holidays!
