Vineyard News
By Operations Manager, Joe Salman
We are on our way!  In the previous issue of The Bridge we talked about the vines being in bloom, now the fruit is set and the berries are near pea size.  As the fruit develops, another manual task out in the vineyard is LEAF REMOVAL.  This task we remove lower leaves along the growing shoots to allow an appropriate amount of air and light on and around the grape bunches.  This task has a direct effect on the quality and characteristics of a wine.  The amount of removal is based on many factors including variety, wine style, row orientation and vine vigor.  Feel free to check this out as the picture is a Cabernet vine near the winery.

Grand Island Vineyard's First On-Site Bottling!
By Winemakers David Shattuck and Ed Seikel

This past Friday was a very exciting time at the winery as it was our very first on-site bottling!  In order to make it a possibility we brought in a mobile bottling truck that is basically an entire bottling line built inside of a small trailer.  Empty glass enters on the right, gets sparged out with nitrogen, filled with wine, corked, the capsules are spun on, the bottles are labeled and then they round a corner in the back to come back out on the left side ready to be put into the cases and sealed up for purchase.  It makes for a long stressful day, but having the control and oversight to make sure we can bring all of you a quality product is well worth the effort.

Bottled on this run were the 2015 Cabernet Franc, 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2016 Pinot Noir.  The Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are also the first two wines to be completely fermented, aged, and bottled at GIV!  All three offerings will most likely be released some time in the next 3-9 months, so stay tuned in to our Facebook page for more information.  Those that were lucky enough to come down to the winery on Father's Day had a chance to taste these freshly bottled wines with us, the winemakers, and get a great futures deal on cases as well so keep an eye out for more opportunities like that!

Tasting Room
Summertime, Party Time at Grand Island Vineyards
By Tasting Room Manager Tess Johnson

What a wonderful turnout we've had at all our events this summer! A big thank you to all of our friends who made it to our one year anniversary party.  Grand Island welcomed just under one thousand guests for the weekend!  We would also like to congratulate Britnee Milan who was the winner of our grand prize raffle, two tickets to our Vineyard Harvest Dinner in October.

Man, if you were here, you already know Father' Day was a tremendous scorcher! The weather didn't keep our guests from visiting and joining us for our Father's Day futures event. Everyone was thoroughly impressed with our newly bottled wines, especially the newest vintage of Cabernet Franc which will be the featured bottle being released with your summer Wine Club shipment. Oh, we've got the Franc, we've got that Franc, yeah!

GIV Wine Family
Say Hello to Michelle and Stevan Mays

Meet Stevan and Michelle Winchester-Mays!  Currently residing in Antioch, Michelle is a nurse at Walnut Creek Dermatology and Stevan is in Global Security DOE. Michelle graduated from Standbridge College with a nursing degree after being a Playboy Playmate and living in the Playboy Mansion for three years. Stevan excelled at Naval School, particularly in explosive ordinance and disposal, and was also a diver at Marine World and maintained Orka, Dolphin and Seal Tanks!  They became great lovers of Grand Island Vineyards because of the wonderful customer service, family-oriented approach, all the amazing fun events AND especially the 2013 Cab Franc.  While not really having a direct connection to anybody on staff, they do agree they absolutely love Tess Jonson, but then again, who doesn't?

Their favorite Grand Island Vineyard wine was the 2013 Cab Franc, until we released the new Bridgehead Red.  Although they didn't want to admit it, their favorite non-GIV wine is the Franzia boxed Merlot, and they enjoy all these wines while relaxing on the back patio eating dinner.  Michelle is also a descendant of the Winchester rifle family, and has many wonderful stories to share.

Wine Spotlight
Introducing the Grand Island 2016 Rosé of Cabernet!
By Grand Island Winemakers David Shattuck and Ed Seikel
This month we are featuring the 2016 Rosé of Cabernet.  It is not by accident we have chosen to feature this Rosé at the start of summer.  Ed and I believe that this Rosé is the perfect wine for BBQ'ing and for hot summer afternoons.  With abundant fresh fruit notes and good acidity coming off the Cabernet Sauvignon vines, it can be consumed in the heat and stays refreshing.  It also has the body to stand up to ribs, burgers and other BBQ fare.

The 2016 Rosé of Cabernet pours a beautiful pink color, with notes of fresh strawberry and watermelon on the nose.  There is a distinct note of white pepper, brioche, and blackberry bramble on the palate.  The mouth-feel is rich with a zingy acidity that powers the Rosé to a mouthwatering finish that invites another glass.

Next time you come down to the winery to pick up some Rosé to help with the current heat wave, you can look to the edge of the grass and see the vines we used to produce this Rosé. Wine Club members can  click here to purchase this Member Exclusive Wine, or consider becoming a Wine Club Member and receive additional benefits and ongoing wines shipped directly to your door!
