Rapid Shoot Growth, Rapid Shoot Thinning.
by Operations Manager, Joe Salman
If you were to go out in any vineyard in California right now you would see the same thing: vines are growing really, really fast! This stage of the cycle of vine physiology has a name: Rapid Shoot Growth and during this period the vines can grow an inch or more a day!
It is also during this period we have to start one of our most important cultural practices to ensure high quality grapes are grown for high quality wines. Known as shoot thinning, this is the main way to ensure a vine will have a nice balance between the vegetative growth and the fruit. Too many shoots with a lot of grape bunches may pose ripening problems and would also have various quality issues. Remove too many shoots, then they grow very long and send out additional lateral shoots. When this happens, your bunches get big and dense and the quality goes down. Shoot thinning ensures when the vine grows and the fruit matures that there is the correct amount of light and air around the grape berries. As you can see if you get too far behind the vines growth, the job gets more and more difficult and more and more time consuming. We try to do this job while the shoots are young and tender before they harden to the main trunk or cordon of the vine, but in reality by the time we get to some varieties they will get quite hard to remove. To give you some idea of the rapid growth, the vines have grown about 5" in the time it took me to write this article! We invite you to come down to the Winery and see this for yourself.
Come Meet the Winemakers and Learn More About These Amazing Wines!
One of the things that David and I love about our special events at the Winery is that it gives us a chance to meet and talk with all of our club members. It's always great to hear from all of you, and it's fun for us to get to talk about the wines we're so proud to make. It's a goal of ours to be accessible to our members so you can really get to know the winemakers behind the wines you're drinking, and get to hear some insights from us on why we think our wines are so special.
That's one of the reasons we're so excited about the new Reserve Wine Club. It's going to give us even more opportunity to interact with members in a more intimate setting. The first chance that our new Reserve members will have to connect with us will be at the
3rd Annual Anniversary Party
on May 25th. We will be doing tastings of some of the new Salman Family Reserve wines in a private section just for the Reserve Club members. This will give us an even better chance to get to know more our members, and for all of you to get to know us, and learn even more about what goes into our wines here at Grand Island Vineyards.
Spring Has Sprung and Special Events are in the Air!

Bottle Your Own Experience
is back! If you've ever been curious about the process of wine making, then here's your chance. This year instead of a blend we will be bottling our 2017 Merlot. You won't want to miss this one! This may be your one and only chance to grab yourself some Grand Island Vineyards Merlot.
We never thought decorating your own label would be so popular but since it was, it's back as well! We had so much fun last year, we can't wait to see all your unique and creative ideas. So come bottle some wine, grab some lunch from the Cichy Co food truck, decorate your label and listen to the sounds of Blues Mechanix. See you soon!

GIV Wine Family
Meet Some of Our Friends and Family - Jay and Alex Reel!
Jay and Alex Reel have been wine club members for two plus years now, which is quite a feat as they live in Citrus Heights! That's quite the drive ;)
Alex is a Learning and Development Specialist for Calstrs while Jay is a Construction and General Contractor for himself, running his own business. Alex has a Bachelors in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and Jay started quickly out of high school, having had field experience since he was five years old with his father.
Alex has had many interesting past work experiences which include being a PetSmart Pet Product Specialist and rock star at Verizon where she won sales competition out of over 10,000 people!
The Reel's came to love Grand Island Vineyards through it's amazing access to the Delta River and being an excellent place to bring the boat and enjoy some fine wines. Their favorite GIV wines are the Rosé of Cabernet and of course, the Bridgehead Bubbles.
Their love of the Bubbles is really saying something as they have enjoyed Champagne from most anywhere and everywhere and have tasted some of the finest in the world.
Jay and Alex were High School Sweethearts and have been together longer than they haven't.
You never know who you might meet here at Grand Island Vineyards, there are always fun, interesting and happy people inside and out. That's one of the best parts of stopping by. Between the staff and the guests, a good time is typically had by everyone!
So Many Wines, Where Do We Begin!
By Winemaker David Shattuck
With our upcoming anniversary party and wine club pickup, we have several very exciting wines that Ed and I would like to talk about. Firstly, we have our new reserve wine club release with the 2017 Chenin Blanc and the 2017 Premier. Both of these wines are from select barrels with alternate vinification techniques that have resulted in wines with unique and exciting character. Additionally, we are proud to be showcasing a Merlot as our bottle your own selection at this wine club pickup.
The 2017 Salman Family Reserve Chenin Blanc was a 100% wild barrel ferment. We allowed the wine to age on lees for over a year before bottling. The wine pours a rich golden hue. Initial aromas of honeycomb, greengage, and aniseed are sensuous and invite deeper contemplation of the complex aromas. As the wine opens, hints of grapefruit pithe, jasmine, and white peach intermingle with hints of flint. The mouthfeel is unctuous with a remarkable rich core wrapped into a soft acidity. The wine is remarkably persistent and finished with a haunting note of peach compote and limestone.
The 2017 Salman Family Reserve Premier features four Bordeaux varietals from small blocks at Grand Island Vineyards. This hearty red wine pours an inky amethyst color. The initial aroma of red currant and spiced oak slowly evolves into a medley of rich black cherry, tobacco humidor, toasted oak, and granite. This wine underwent an extended maceration during fermentation that provides a opulent but focused mouthfeel. The finish is prolonged by a sense of elegant french oak and dusty blackberry wrapped in mineral driven acidity.
Our bottle your own selection for this club pickup is a 2017 Merlot. We only produced two barrels of this vintage of Merlot and one of those barrels was used in the 2017 Premier. We are excited to allow our wine club members to enjoy this last barrel of Merlot at our club pickup party. The 2017 Merlot is a brick red color. The wine is fruit forward with bright notes of blueberry, black cherry, and hints of baking spice. The tannins in this wine are supple and showcase flavors of butter, caramelized sugar, and chocolate. The wine finishes with robust flavors of plum, bay leaf, and char.
