A Diary of Harvest (Part 2)
by Operations Manager, Joe  Salman

These last couple weeks of harvest have definitely been the peak  of harvest. We have been machine picking our large lot vineyards for other wineries at night (every night) and handpicking small lot varieties for Grand Island Vineyards and also supplying some other boutique wineries with handpicked grapes as well.

Aug 24th - Sept 7th, Machine harvested a lot of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc
Aug 30th, 6 am - Handpicked Symphony for GIV
Sept 2nd, 6am - Handpicked Sauvignon Blanc for GIV
September 5th, 6am - Handpicked Chenin Blanc for GIV (BRIDGEHEAD BLANC, stay tuned)
September 6th, 6am - Handpicked Pinot Noir for GIV (This fruit looked amazing, 2017 Pinot Noir)
September 8th - current, 10pm - Machine harvest Pinot Noir (this is the lightest crop since the first harvest year)

More 2017 harvest to come.......

For centuries vineyards have been doing some sort of harvest dinner for their hired help as maybe not even as celebration, but as a necessary thank you and way to energize for the work that still lies ahead for harvest. My family has been doing this years and not really even had a name for it, but just a way during the ciaos of harvest and crush to actually sit down have a real meal (not that I don't enjoy my midnight lunches packed by my wife) and try to take a pause from the time of year where everything is work. We all know that the harvest dinner has morphed into celebrations and even festivals. I don't want to go to either one of those, but what I would like on Oct 7th for you to join me in our traditional harvest dinner where I hope we can unwind, uncork, relax, and recharge. Harvest Coming to a Close: To the Destemmer!
By Winemaker Ed Seikel

This month we're continuing our look at the equipment that is an integral part of processing our grapes into juice we can ferment.  Last month we went over the receiving hopper, which was the first step regardless of if we were processing white or red grapes.  This month we'll be following the path used if we're receiving red grapes.  In this case, the next step for the clusters is to head into the destemmer.

Most of the color, flavor, and tannins we all enjoy in our favorite red wines are actually found in the skins of the grapes.  So unlike white wine grapes where we immediately press the juice out of the whole clusters, we ferment red wine grapes whole, skins and all.  Complicating matters is the fact that the stems can actually impart some negative qualities into the finished wine such as harsh tannins and vegetal characteristics.  This is where the destemmer comes into play.

The destemmer consists of a spinning cylindrical barrel with grape size holes with a spiraling set of paddles in it's interior.  The grape clusters get dropped into the center of the cylinder where the paddles knock the grapes off of the stems.  The grapes then drop out through the holes into a bin underneath while the stems shoot out of the end of the cylinder.  In the end we're left with a bin filled with stems and a bin with nothing but whole red grapes ready to be fermented.  And once the wine has extracted the right amount of color and tannin during fermentation it's then time for next month's focus: the press!

Tasting Room
Record Numbers at Grand Island Vineyards!
By Tasting Room Manager Tess Jonson

After Dark may have been one of the hottest days of the year but that didn't keep from music playing, people dancing, and of course some wonderful wines being poured. After Dark will continue year round so if you haven't made one yet, don't worry, there's more to come.  Hope to see you soon!

An amazing time was had by all who joined us for the Bridgehead Bubbles release party.  The bubbles paired beautifully with the margarita pizza and california rolls.  So much so that our guests asked for seconds.  YUM!  If you happened to miss the release party keep watch for our next bubbles event.  An event that you definitely do not want to miss!

GIV Wine Family
Say Hello to Connie De Mars!

Connie has been a member of the beloved GIV wine family member since May of 2016, and currently lives in Courtland working as a Home Chef. She has attended multiple colleges including MTI and Sac City, before working for Blue Diamond Almond for 25 years and also a building design center for 5 years. Being friends with Tess and Sherry before starting at GIV, she really came to love the Vineyards while driving by during construction and seeing the grounds flourish. After several passes, Connie decided she was going to try to get a job here, and WALLAH!

Her taste in wine is impeccable; her favorite GIV wine is the New Winemakers Blend and her favorite non-GIV wine is Twisted Rivers Raven. She likes to enjoy GIV wines when cooking, both internally and in the food which comes in handy because Connie really loves people and working at GIV affords her the opportunity to meet nice people every day. Stop by and introduce yourself, make a new friend and enjoy wonderful wines in a beautiful setting.

Grand Island Gro unds
Featuring the Wedding of Gary and Jennifer Brisco!

Love is a miraculous gift, and a wedding is a celebration of that magic, and Grand Island Vineyards was overjoyed to share that magic with Gary and Jennifer Brisco. It might have been one of the hottest days of the year but that didn't keep from the pure delight to see how happy two people in love can be. The winery served as a backdrop to the beautiful ceremony with flower lanterns and garland hung from the balcony above.  Jennifer made her entrance down the beautifully landscaped walk of Grand Island Vineyards.

After the ceremony, the guests enjoyed appetizers and drinks in the GIV tasting room followed by a breath taking barrel room for dinner and dancing.  We have loved getting to know these two special people.   A big congratulations to the Brisco's and thank you for sharing your special day with us.
