Winter Time = Pruning Time,  by Joe Salman

In the dead of winter when the vines are in deep sleep (dormant), it is the time for pruning.   We are currently pruning back last years vine growth to ensure a balanced vine of well spaced fruit.  (See pruned Pinot Noir vine below) This is but one of many jobs throughout the year leading up to harvest that will supply the winery with fruit being transformed into another beloved estate grown wine. Stay tuned for what is happening in the vineyard, or better yet, come to Grand Island Vineyards and see for yourself!

Cellar News
What's Happening in the Cellar? Everything!

From David Shattuck and Ed Seikel - The GIV Winemakers! - Although we have had the chance to meet many of the wonderful club members and supporters of Grand Island Vineyards, Ed and I wanted to take this chance to say hello and introduce ourselves.

We are the new winemakers at the winery and are very much looking forward to introducing ourselves and showing off the 2016 vintage. For us, the early winter months are some of the most exciting moments in the cellar. We are finally able to taste the newly fermented young red wines and assess the quality of the vintage. This year the wines are particularly high quality and are marked by fresh fruit notes and velvet like structure in the wine.

Tasting Room
News from the GIV Tasting Room, by Tess Jonson

It's been pouring outside and we've been pouring inside. With our busiest season yet some of you were able to join us for our port trial, if you weren't able to make it, you should have. The vintage style port blew the ruby style out of the vineyard. You will likely have another chance to taste the final blend of this vintage style port and help us name our newest addition. We are hoping to have this bottled by November just in time to enjoy for the holidays.

The Tasting Room is currently open Friday through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. There are always openings for private or public events, as we've enjoyed servicing many celebrations! Contact us for more information.

Wine Spotlight
Fiano - BRIDGEHEAD, Clarksburg 2014

This month we are featuring a very unique grape varietal: Fiano.  This grape varietal is typically found  in Southern Italy and particularly in the Campania region.  In California, there is only around 50 tons of Fiano harvested a year which makes it one of the rarest grape varietals in the state.  The wine made from Fiano grapes typically has a rich mouthfeel and notes of honey and nuttiness on the palate.

This wine is beautiful right now so come down and try the 2014 Bridgehead Fiano at Grand Island Vineyards.
