Classroom Highlight: Middle School Life Skills
By Kade Drechsler
Chippewa River, Pigeon River, and Temperance River have been experiencing some of the joyous tasks of adulthood in Middle School Life Skills class including cooking, meal planning, and grocery shopping. It's no surprise that the highlight of class is when we make food in the kitchen! Our agreed upon expectation is that if you don't clean, you don't cook, so all students have been working diligently to clean up after our cooking sessions as well.
Focusing on functional recipes and skills, students have made several recipes they can recreate independently without needing to use the stove or oven. We are incorporating some recipes that use the stove and oven as well so that students are able to increase their skill and comfort level with those appliances. Recently, students have begun working on planning meals for a week and determining the total cost of food for that week.
Knowing that some students have limited diets and/or sensory aversions to some foods, I collaborated with Ali Bicek, an amazing occupational therapist (OT) from Capernaum to discuss less negative ways to talk about food. Tips to try include describing food by it's shape, color, smell (strong, sweet, sour), size, taste (spicy, sweet, sour, flavorful, bland), temperature, and texture (crunchy, soft, wet, bumpy). We practice this in class and it has helped students be more adventurous with making the food, even if they aren’t ready to try tasting it yet.

Kim Strandemo, Franklin Academy Principal
Hello Franklin Families! I am excited to share some exciting updates regarding Franklin Academy with you.
I would like to again congratulate Minnehaha Falls teacher Anita Haas on winning MINNDEPENDENT’s 2023 Honor Teacher award. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional teachers who have a passion for students and education. Anita is certainly deserving of such an accolade; we are grateful to have such high-quality faculty members here in the academy.
Speaking of faculty, I am excited to announce that we have a number of new staff members joining us in the academy! This month, we have brought on two new Behavior Therapists- one one each in Middle School and High School, a new High School Math Teacher, and a School-Based Substitute Teacher. In a time of nation-wide educator shortages, we are thrilled to be adding these exceptional individuals to our team.
Just in case you missed it, we are happy to announce that we are partnering with Hennepin Technical College! Transportation will be provided to and from Franklin Center and a staff member will be in the classroom as support staff. Students will be able to enroll in a for-credit class which will demonstrate to them the options available at Hennepin Tech. The course is open to High School and Capstone students, a 6th grade or higher math and reading level is recommended.
Finally, over this coming break the renovations to the library will begin. We are looking forward to being able to make this space as beautiful and functional as the rest of our building.
As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or comments!
Best,
-Kim
P.S. If you have not yet voted Franklin Center for MN’s Best (in the education - private school category), you can do so here!
