Special Person's Day


Special Person's Day will be held on Tuesday, November 22nd from 1-3 pm. This is an opportunity for your child(ren) to invite a special person in their life to experience learning at Franklin Academy. If your child(ren)'s special person will be bringing them home following this event and you are no longer in need of your Owls' Nest registration, please email both your child(ren)'s teacher and Amber Trapp at amber.trapp@franklinmn.org.The tentative schedule is as follows:


1:00-2:00 pm | Thank you project and Gratitude Bags which will be delivered later to the Golden Valley Fire Department.


2:00-3:00 pm | Attend a market with items made by your "special person" and attend the Book Fair. Purchases will be made via tickets available at the entrance of the market. Tickets can be purchased using cash or donations of the following items:


  • $5 gift cards to any local businesses, gas or coffee cards
  • Chewing Gum packets
  • Granola/Protein bars
  • Lifesaver Hard candy rolls


All donations for Special Person's Day will go to the Golden Valley Fire Relief Association.

Holiday Party!


Join us for Danny and Steve's 2nd Annual Holiday Open House! Franklin Center parents Danny Della Lana and Steve Hall invite all Franklin Center parents, caregivers, board members, and staff to celebrate the season on Friday, December 9 from 6-9 pm at their home, 1920 Pillsbury Avenue South in Minneapolis.


You may park on the street in front of their home, or at the parking lot located next door at 204 W Franklin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55403.


Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served at this adults-only gathering. RSVP by December 2nd via your Evite invitation.

Classroom Highlight: Highschool Journalism

In Journalism, a guest speaker joined our class last week to answer the students' questions about topics such as data privacy and online safety. Mr. Ross is a computer security professional who has worked in the field for over 20 years. Some of the many topics we discussed included the importance of password security, how to know if a downloaded file is dangerous, data encryption, different ways scammers will try to get your information, and anti-virus software. Everyone was engaged, respectful, and asked fantastic questions.

Capstone Parent Information Night


You are invited to join us for Capstone Parent Information Night on Tuesday, November 15th from 7:00-8:00 pm!


This event features a parent roundtable discussion, hosted by the Franklin Capstone Program. Parents of some of our current participants will be joining to discuss and share their experiences and information on the following topics:

  • Transitioning into Adulthood
  • Post-secondary Options
  • Employment
  • Anything else you want to ask!

PTO Book Fair Volunteer Help


The PTO is hosting a book fair on Special Person's Day (November 22nd). We need parents to help with set up on Friday, November 18th after school (3-5 PM), and to help run the fair and pack up on Tuesday, November 22nd (1-5 PM). We need about five volunteers per shift! Older students are welcome to help as well. Owls Nest will be available for free for those with younger students who would like to volunteer.

Coffee and Convos


Franklin Center's Coffee and Convo events provide a fun way to get to know other parents or caregivers in our community. Held on the second Friday of each month after drop off (around 8am), parents and guests can stop in for coffee and breakfast treats (often made by our students in the culinary science class) to mingle and get to know one another better. Events are held in our beautiful community room at Franklin Center. Come join us!

Session Two clubs will begin the week of November 14, 2022. The following clubs have been canceled due to low registration numbers: GoSolar Kidz: Solar Power Your Drone, NeuLingo, and LS Minecraft Club. Please note start and end dates may vary based on the following: Special Olympics tournament dates, and weather-dependent clubs that coordinates with an outside organization other than Franklin Center.

Letters From Leaders

Kade Drechsler, Manager of Curriculum & Instruction


This week we hosted an accreditation team from Minnesota Nonpublic School Accreditation Association (MNSAA). The last time we went through the accreditation process we had around 30 students. Last spring, when we were completing the majority of the Accreditation Self Study - a “self-audit” of sorts - we had around 75 students. Currently, we have 91 students enrolled at Franklin Academy. I reference these numbers to highlight why the Accreditation process through MNSAA is so valuable for us here at Franklin; over the past 7 years, nothing has been static - based on who we are and what we do, we are always pivoting to provide the best support and educational experience we can for each of our students. Essentially the mindset, as you may have heard from Kim Strandemo, is “continuous improvement”. Through the accreditation process, we’ve been able to strategically and intentionally identify the pieces that we want and need to solidify to provide the best learning experience for our students and to live our mission every day.


One aspect of my role in this I’d like to highlight is academic planning and curriculum mapping. There’s a balance we need to achieve between having academic guardrails for each of our students to fit within while also allowing for enough flexibility to ensure we are meeting the needs of each student. This balance allows us to solidify “what” we do while being able to change “how” we do it based on students’ needs. As our enrollment has been growing rapidly, this has been a significant challenge for our faculty. Over the next few months, I will be taking a deep dive into what grade level of content we are teaching at each level, who we are teaching it to, how many students collectively at each grade level of instruction, and what that means for the big picture of our academic landscape presently. From this, it will help myself and the rest of the Academy Leadership Team (ALT) determine where we need to go in the future - through a sustainable, thoughtful, and most importantly, student-focused lens.
