Unity Day October 19
Did you know that October is National Bullying Prevention Month?

Academy of Whole Learning students and staff will celebrate Unity Day on Tuesday, October 19. This day is a national effort to recognize the importance of creating a culture of care and respect in schools as we stand together against bullying. Students are encouraged to wear orange clothing or accessories as a part of the Unity Day movement.

For more information on National Bullying Prevention Month and Unity Day, check out the Pacer Website!
AOWL-o-ween is on October 29!
On Friday October 29, Students and staff may choose to participate in AOWL-o-ween by dressing up as a character from a favorite book!

Here are the guidelines for appropriate costumes:

  • Come dressed as a book character
  • Costumes or hats cannot cover face or eyes -- everyday face coverings will still be expected.
  • Costumes may not include weapons
  • Costumes should be fun or clever rather than intentionally scary

Teachers may ask a student to remove part or all of a costume if it does not meet these guidelines.

Dr. Sous's News
Happy October, AOWL Families!

Thank you for a warm welcome as I dive into my new role as your Principal. I very much enjoyed meeting several new and returning families both at the Summer Sensory Fest and Back to School Ice Cream Social in August. I believe in the power of relationships, and look forward to getting to know more of you as the school year continues.

For me, September’s highlight was Curriculum Night. I was able to observe our educators present their academic, social skills, and life skills frameworks and respond to questions from our families with thoughtfulness and care. I am in awe of the level of dedication to personalization that our staff and community give to our students and families.

One of the things that stood out early on was that Academy of Whole Learning is so special because of the relationships we build and nurture. There is a sense of genuine care and deep respect for one another between families, staff, school leadership, and the Board of Directors. I am touched by the relationships that were built long before I arrived and continue to grow as I begin to build relationships with all of you.

It has been fun working with a team of dedicated staff and meeting our families. Some of the highlights that have shown me who we are include: greeting students by name during morning drop off and exchanging ideas about how to celebrate our seniors over the phone with a long-time parent. More recently, I enjoyed a cup of hot tea at Redstone with a new parent, and met more of you over baked goods during the PTO Coffee & Convo.

As we continue to grow together and look forward to what is to come, I want to invite you to join us at future events. We are on this journey of growth and discovery together, and I look forward to building the relationships with you that will make this year a success.

Sincerely,
Dr. Sousada Grande
