AOWL Attendance Reminders
Academy of Whole Learning believes that regular school attendance is directly related to success in the academic world, benefits the students socially, provides opportunities for important communication between teachers and students, and establishes regular habits of dependability important to the future of the student. Please communicate with [email protected] ahead of time if your child will be tardy or absent. The below information comes directly from our Family Handbook, shared with all AOWL families, and available on our website. Please refer to the "Attendance" section for additional information.

Absent/Tardy Procedure
If a student will be absent, please call or email the school ([email protected]) as well as your student’s homeroom/advisory teacher by 8:30 a.m. to report the absence with the following information:
  • Day information is being reported
  • Student’s full name
  • Reason for absence (including symptoms in case of illness)
  • Name and relation of the person reporting the absence

We strongly encourage you to schedule doctor and dentist appointments, etc. outside the school day and calendar. Our students benefit from as much continuity and consistency as possible.
Parents of tardy students must sign their student in at the front office. Due to COVID, a phone call to 952-737-6900 at the time of student drop-off is an acceptable way to sign in your student.

Students who arrive late to class during the school day without a valid reason will also be considered tardy.

Parents are responsible for getting their children to school on time. If a student is regularly tardy or absent (unexcused) Academy of Whole Learning administration will conference with parents to review the problem, notify them of the requirements of the state attendance law, and outline corrective action.

All absences and tardies will be noted on report cards/WIPPs and student files.
If you feel you need support for your family in this matter, AOWL will work with families in any way that supports the betterment of the student’s social, emotional, and academic wellbeing whenever possible.
Arrival/Dismissal Update
We follow the advice of the Minnetonka Police to find the best queuing situation for our families when dropping off or picking up, and they have advised that Middle and High School parents/caregivers should wait in the Ice Arena parking lot until it is time to move forward. Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to make these adjustments!
Upcoming Conferences!
Due to the continued high transmission rate of COVID-19, conferences will take place virtually this year.

There will be NO SCHOOL on October 7 and 8 for Professional Development and Conferences Preparation (Activity Days will be offered). AOWL faculty will be completing a summary of data and information to help guide your conferences, including social emotional and academic components.

  • Evening virtual conferences take place on October 18 and 19 from 3:00 - 8:00 PM.

  • Daytime virtual conferences are on October 20 from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. There will be NO SCHOOL on this day, but an Activity Day will be offered.

Look for an email in the coming weeks from classroom teachers for a time to sign up for your virtual conference!

Wyayn's Words
AOWL is an organization that is fueled with high expectations. We stand behind being an Exceptional School for Exceptional Learners and accept no less.

A best practice that all excelled educators follow is the use of information and data to inform their future decisions. Being connected and responsive to our families' needs can aid us in reaching greater heights.

One source of information we value is the Annual Parent Survey. We had more parents participate in this year’s survey than ever before. Thank you to thank all the families that participated last spring in giving us valuable feedback in AOWL's imperative work.

Parents identify our strengths as:
  • small class sizes
  • individualization
  • friendship opportunities
  • quality teachers and staff

In regards to a few examples of goals that we will work to improve on are:
  • Teaching time management and organization skills
These are two skills we focus on within the classroom and see measurable improvements in the classroom on a regular basis. We recognize the importance of generalizing these skills into the home and community. Lower and Middle School parents will learn more about strategies they can use to help their children further develop and generalize these skills at conferences from our Behavior Therapy Department. High School parents and caregivers will learn more about individual strategies both through conferences and through the upcoming individual family conferences.

  • Our Student Information System (SIS), Gradelink, is not as parent friendly as you would like
We have committed to researching new platforms this year that are more parent, teacher and administration friendly and are cost-friendly too.

Please continue to reach out to give feedback, brainstorm ideas, and celebrate successes! This year, we are Building our Future Together!!
