Curriculum Night September 14 and 16
|
|
Welcome to September!
As we dive into our year, please remember our focus: BUILDING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER.
AOWL is your partner in addressing the needs and hopes for your child. To start, we are providing a Virtual Curriculum Night for each level. Teachers, specialists, and behavior therapists will be communicating plans for AOWL's learners. Curriculum Night is your chance to hear about the details around content areas, schedules, guidelines, and upcoming events. Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions through the Q&A feature or, if time permits, during the meeting.
Please register for the Curriculum Night(s) you would like to attend!

High School and Adult Education Flag Football (cost $170)
Thursdays 3:30 – 4:30, beginning September 16
- Description: Flag football is offered as a Unified Sport, which means individuals with and without disabilities play on the same team. Flag football is a fast moving game with a lot of variety. Players run, jump, quickly change direction, and stop and start, which improves cardiovascular health. Practice drills, complex running routes and defensive techniques all encourage speed, strength, and stamina. And these activities also engage motor skills, specifically hand and eye coordination. Every position has a purpose and to execute a play successfully, each individual needs to fulfill their responsibility, while working together—a skill that’s valuable both on and off the field.
- Objectives: Teamwork, Discipline, Mental Toughness, Socialization, Leadership and Positive Sportsmanship
- Sign up through Smart Tuition today!
The first session of clubs will run from Oct. 25 - Dec. 17.

Community
We’ve heard over and over again about the importance of community. Having a sense of community unites us. Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves. It can give us opportunities to connect with people, to reach for our goals, and makes us feel safe and secure. It's important for every person to have a sense of community.
COVID has tried to put a damper on our sense of community, but at AOWL we’re trying to fight back. If you’re new to the school, you might not know that our parents came together last spring to provide Ms. Anita meals every week during her chemo treatments. I've seen it in our staff as they pitch in to cover for positions or people due to family health emergencies. I’ve seen it in our students who reach out to new classmates to make sure everyone is included during outdoor gym activities and classroom discussions.
We purposefully work to build community with all of our stakeholders. After school enrichment programming is one way we provide community opportunities for students (sign up for enrichment programming through Smart Tuition), and our therapeutic and social skills groups is another (contact Karla Przybylski at therapyservices@aowl.org for more information). Being part of the Parent-Teacher Organization or attending AOWL events are ways for families to build community. The next virtual PTO meeting is on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 3:30 pm. Join us here.
Thanks for being part of our community!
