Welcome to The Bridge, a weekly update of the Rappahannock River District of the UMC
This Saturday - Walking the Journey Together
  with Bishop Pete Weaver

Eastertide
Rappahannock River & Richmond District Day
Saturday, May 11
Wright's Chapel UMC
8063 Ladysmith Road, Ruther Glen
2:00pm - 3:30pm

' Jesus was talking to us on the road'  (Luke 24:32)

Bishop Pete Weaver is inviting clergy and laity of the Virginia Conference to join him in district gatherings in May and early June.
"Jesus most often journeyed in the company of others," said Weaver. "Even in our context, we can learn from each other and practice our Christian love for each other by journeying together. I am inviting you to join me in a district gathering in May and early June so we may have conversation 'on the road' together."
He explained, "We will share in Communion, seek to care for one another, and look at the meaning of the Judicial Council decisions and their implications as your Bishop and Cabinet seek to follow the Book of Discipline which governs our church."

A copy of Bishop Weaver’s invitation and the schedule are attached or may be found on the conference website at  https://www.vaumc.org/pages/news/2019vanews/2019vanews_walkingthejourneytogether

This is for clergy AND laity.

Kits for Conference

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is currently focusing efforts on  Cleaning Kits  (aka Flood Buckets),  Hygiene Kits , and  School Kits . Click on the kit name to see PDFs for specific item listing and assembly instructions as well as the  Kits for Conference logo  to assist you with promoting your efforts.
Collection of the kits will begin Wednesday, June 19 from 4—8 p.m. and continue Thursday, June 20 from 8 a.m.—7 p.m., and Friday, June 21 from 8 a.m.—5 p.m. Contact Kit Collection Coordinator, the Rev. Morris Fleischer (Newport-Mt. Olivet UMC/Roanoke District), at (540) 544-7183 or  morrisfleischer@vaumc.org  with any questions.   Click here to sign up to volunteer .
If you prefer to make a financial contribution to enable UMCOR to purchase relief kits, you can contribute $75 for each cleaning kit; $12 for each health kit; and $11 for each school kit. Additionally, UMCOR asks for $1 per kit ($3.00 for cleaning buckets) to cover processing and shipping and $1 for toothpaste for each health kit. Please do NOT bring checks to Annual Conference. All checks (for processing and shipping, for toothpaste, and in lieu of providing kits) should be made payable to “Virginia Conference UMC,” earmarked for “kits” and mailed to Treasurer, Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 5605, Glen Allen, VA, 23058 any time prior to Annual Conference and no later than August 31

Here are a few points of clarification based on several questions I've received recently:

  • There is no need to print out shipping labels for your boxes. While labels are available for downloading at the UMCOR website, our kits are not being transported to the Sager Brown Center in Baldwin, Louisiana but rather to Mission Central in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania (UMCOR's warehouse for the east coast). Simply label your boxes using a marker with the type(s) and number of kits in it.

  • It is important that the Hygiene and School Kits are dropped off in boxes rather than bags. Our kits are being transported via transfer truck and will be loaded onto pallets and wrapped with cellophane. Boxes keep the kits from being crushed during transport and unloading.  Cleaning Kits (aka Flood Buckets) do not need to be in boxes if they are complete and sealed with their accompanying lid.

  • Due to the adjusted Conference schedule, kits need to be delivered on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. With Conference ending at Noon, there will not be any kit collection on Saturday. As you can see from the schedule, we've "front-loaded" our hours to allow ample time for receiving your kits:  Wednesday, June 19 (4:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m.), Thursday, June 20 (8:00 a.m.—7:00 p.m.), and Friday, June 21 (8:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m.).

  • In order to improve traffic flow into Annual Conference, the Kit Collection Point (as well as 4 Cans for Conference) will be on the same side of as in previous years but will be further back (toward I-581) instead of directly across from Sheetz. We will have plenty of signage around the lot to help you find us!

As always, I am happy to answer any questions you may have.  Thank you for all your work in this vital ministry!

The Rappahannock River District (RRD) Scholarship Program

Higher Education has always been a hallmark of the United Methodist Church. The value of resources for continued learning and higher education is fundamental to United Methodism. In keeping with our tradition of supporting higher learning, the Rappahannock River District (RRD) of the United Methodist Church has created a Student Scholarship Program.  The program is maintained and administered by the RRD and is not connected with any other United Methodist board, agency, or entity.

Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who meet the program criteria as funding allows. Persons eligible to apply are those who are attending or who plan to attend a college, seminary or trade school and are members of a United Methodist Church on the Rappahannock River District. Please see attached guidelines for more details.

Please click below to download an application. If you prefer one in Word, just email  rappahannockriverdistrict@vaumc.org  and let us know.

Email Scams
Recently another Phishing email came out related to Bishop Sharma Lewis.

There is also one going out from our district leadership list. The return emails show a name of someone on our district but an email address that is not theirs. Those start with " How are you doing today? Are you available?"

Phishing is when an email is sent using words in the email or pretends to be from an account they are not. Usually they are asking for action from you, such as sending funds, sending an email, your credentials, etc. These are almost always sent from criminal organizations. If you recgonize a future phishing email, please DELETE it.
