God as the Great Justifier

By Mike Riley

An essential part of the nature of deity is justness. God is absolutely just — never doing anything which would be in violation of His justness (cf. Isaiah 45:21-22; Acts 3:14). In contrast, man is a violator of law being worthy of condemnation and death.

In fact, man justly deserves to die (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23). God’s justness and man’s unrighteousness contained this dilemma — how could God maintain His perfect justness and save man? Could God merely overlook man’s sin and say that it was all right? If He did, He would not be absolutely just.

From the Scriptures, we understand that justness demands two things: (1)the rewarding of the obedient (Romans 2:7; Romans 2:10) and (2)the punishment of the disobedient (Romans 2:8-9). To assure man of God’s fairness in dealing with this matter, Paul said:

who will render to each one according to his deeds: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness — indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also of the Greek. For there is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:6-11).

This affirmation is repeated in Colossians 3:24-25:

Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for the wrong which he has done, and there is no partiality.

We are thus assured, knowing God is absolutely fair in His dealing with the obedient and the disobedient! However, the justness of God also presents this problem: Since there are no just men because all men are sinners (Romans 3:23), what hope did man have?

The only way in which God could maintain His justness and make sinful man right in the sight of law was demonstrated in the death of His Son, Jesus Christ. The death of a sinless Being satisfied the demands of justness and made possible the justifying of man. In simple terms, Jesus had to die in order that man might be made right in the sight of law.

Mature in Heart Ministry

2024 Mature in Heart Pennsylvania Dutch Country Excursion:

We are accepting registrations for the 2024 trip to Lancaster County Pennsylvania to see the September 19th showing of "Daniel" at the Sight and Sound Theater. The bus will be scheduled to leave at 4am on the 19th and estimated to return between 9pm and 10pm on the 20th. A minimum initial deposit of $120 is required to secure a spot. This should be completed by December 31, 2023 to allow us to plan for the number to attend. The deposit (and subsequent payments) can be made by cash, check (payable to Church of Christ in Roxbury), or electronically via our e-giving link: churchofchristinroxbury.org/e-giving. If you make your deposit or any subsequent payments electronically, please follow up with an email to cocroxbury@gmail.com with the subject line 2024 Pennsylvania Trip, and your name and payment amount in the body of the email.

The number of participants is limited by bus capacity. The overall cost of the charter bus, show ticket hotel and banquet has increased by $54 per person from 2023, however we have made some changes and restrictions to try to reduce the impact.

1. The minimum number for the event is increased from 24 to 30 (bus passengers). This will ensure that the bus cost per person is no more than $145.

2. The family-only restriction is removed for triple and quad hotel accommodations. However, we are requiring that all roommates be identified at the time of registration and the spots are not confirmed until all roommates have registered. There are also restrictions on refunds to make sure room costs are covered. More details are available upon request. Please see Bro. or Sis. Gallington, Sis. Keitrice Johnson, or Sis. Elizabeth Nagarajah with any questions.

Based on the changes described above, the following are the trip costs for 2024:

  • Quad Occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $352
  • Triple occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $371
  • Double occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $408
  • Single occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $535
  • Grand king hotel room, two banquet seats, two bus seats and two theater seats -- $859
  • Banquet seat and theater seat only -- $120

All balances must be paid in ful by the end of June. Please see Bro. Gallington with any questions.
