Remembering God and Being Disturbed

As Christians, we might expect to find comfort in remembering God, but such is not always the case. The Psalmist said:
“When I remember God, then I am disturbed” (Psalm 77:3 – NASB).
From this passage, it is evident that remembering God does not always bring us happiness. In fact, many times, sadness or unhappiness occurs.
- When we remember God’s holiness and our sinfulness — then we become disturbed.
- When we remember God’s goodness versus our ingratitude for all He’s done for us, we are disturbed. The goodness of God is meant to lead us to repentance (2 Corinthians 7:6-10 – NKJV). Like the Psalmist, we call to our minds better days and are brought to consider our ways (Haggai 1:5 – NKJV; Haggai 1:7 – NKJV; Lamentations 3:40 – NKJV) in order to discover how we have departed from the living God (Hebrews 3:12 – NKJV).
- When we remember God’s faithful service to us and our unfaithfulness to Him, it gives us cause to be disturbed. There is so much to do in the Lord’s kingdom, and so little gets done (Matthew 9:37-38 – NKJV; John 4:35 – NKJV). Brethren, if that thought does not trouble us, then we are truly in a serious spiritual condition.
However, we should also remember that the kind of disturbance Gods brings us is a disturbance of our soul which leads us through tears to triumph (Matthew 5:4 – NKJV; James 4:7-10 – NKJV; cf. Psalm 119:67 – NKJV; Psalm 119:71 – NKJV; Hebrews 12:9-11 – NKJV).
If there is sin in our life, may we all become “disturbed” to the point of godly repentance, asking God to forgive us of our sin in order to be brought back into a right relationship with Him (1 John 1:9 – NKJV; cf. Proverbs 28:13 – NKJV).

As noted under News & Notes, it is no longer necessary to sign up in advance to attend worship services in person.

2023 Mature in Heart Pennsylvania Dutch Country Excursion: Our 2023 trip is scheduled for Thursday, September 14th through Friday, September 15th to see a production of “Moses” at the Sight & Sound Theater in Lancaster at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14th. The cost for bus, hotel, dinner and show is as follows:
- $340/person for quad occupancy (families)
- $358/person for triple occupancy (families)
- $393/person for double occupancy
- $514 for single occupancy
- $830/couple for grand king room
Sign up is open now and a $75 deposit is required by to hold a spot. The number is limited by bus capacity and hotel availability. If you have not already done so, please get your deposit in ASAP to secure your spot so we can finalize the theater seating. Seats can only be assigned for purchased tickets.
