Predestination Revisited

By Mike Riley

Paul wrote to the Ephesian brethren regarding our being predestined: “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself” (Ephesians 1:4-5).

Folks in the religious world are extremely confused regarding the topic of predestination. They think that if folks are not a member of those predestined for eternal life, they are just out of luck, eternally damned, and there is nothing they can do about it.

It’s interesting to note however, that those predestined, are a particular group or class of people that God chose before the foundation of the world and not individuals.

If we want to be a part of the “chosen” ones, it is our responsibility to be a part of that class of obedient believers (note the phrase in Ephesians 1:4, “chose us in Him [Christ]”).

The story is told of a school teacher who, on the first day of class, told his students that some would pass and some would fail the course they were about to take. He then described the criteria necessary for one to be in the group who would pass.

At the end of the school year, just as the teacher had said, some passed and some failed the course.

Now, let us ask ourselves this question, “Since the teacher had predestined the outcome before he began, does it mean that he caused each individual to either pass or fail and there was nothing they could do about it?”

Certainly not! It was the choice of each individual student to be either in the group who failed the course, or in the group who passed the course.

Likewise, God predetermined before He made the world, that He would “choose” those who “chose” to be in a right relationship with Christ — “in Christ” — and now it is up to us to “choose” to be in that class of people.

Will we choose to be “in Christ” by obeying the gospel of Christ (Romans 6:17), or will we choose to remain outside of Christ in a lost condition?

The “choice” is ours (Joshua 24:14-15).

Mature in Heart Ministry

2024 Mature in Heart Pennsylvania Dutch Country Excursion:

We are accepting registrations for the 2024 trip to Lancaster County Pennsylvania to see the September 19th showing of "Daniel" at the Sight and Sound Theater. The bus will be scheduled to leave at 4am on the 19th and estimated to return between 9pm and 10pm on the 20th. A minimum initial deposit of $120 is required to secure a spot. This should be completed by December 31, 2023 to allow us to plan for the number to attend. The deposit (and subsequent payments) can be made by cash, check (payable to Church of Christ in Roxbury), or electronically via our e-giving link: churchofchristinroxbury.org/e-giving. If you make your deposit or any subsequent payments electronically, please follow up with an email to cocroxbury@gmail.com with the subject line 2024 Pennsylvania Trip, and your name and payment amount in the body of the email.

The number of participants is limited by bus capacity. The overall cost of the charter bus, show ticket hotel and banquet has increased by $54 per person from 2023, however we have made some changes and restrictions to try to reduce the impact.

1. The minimum number for the event is increased from 24 to 30 (bus passengers). This will ensure that the bus cost per person is no more than $145.

2. The family-only restriction is removed for triple and quad hotel accommodations. However, we are requiring that all roommates be identified at the time of registration and the spots are not confirmed until all roommates have registered. There are also restrictions on refunds to make sure room costs are covered. More details are available upon request. Please see Bro. or Sis. Gallington, Sis. Keitrice Johnson, or Sis. Elizabeth Nagarajah with any questions.

Based on the changes described above, the following are the trip costs for 2024:

  • Quad Occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $352
  • Triple occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $371
  • Double occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $408
  • Single occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $535
  • Grand king hotel room, two banquet seats, two bus seats and two theater seats -- $859
  • Banquet seat and theater seat only -- $120
