Are We Giving Our Children Leftovers? (Part 2)
By Mike Riley

Biblical Wisdom Regarding Material Things
Solomon once stated regarding material things: “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fatted ox and hatred with it” (Proverbs 15:17-RSV).
Paul wrote to the brethren at Philippi:
“I have learned in whatsoever state I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11).
Paul wrote to Timothy: “Godliness with contentment is great gain” and warned that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil; and because of that fact, we should not trust in riches (1 Timothy 6:6; 1 Timothy 6:10-11 1 Timothy 6:17-19).
This World Is Not Our Home
We tend to forget that this world is not our home, and that we can take none of our possessions with us (Job 1:21; 1 Timothy 6:7). Only those treasures which are stored in Heaven will survive (Matthew 6:19-21).
Our Most Prized Treasure
Our most prized physical treasures should be our children and grandchildren, and we should want them to go to Heaven more than anything else. Surely this is true of any serious-minded mother.
Training Our Children In God’s Word
Because of the great moral decay in our country that we are seeing on a daily basis, there is no greater need than to properly train our children in God’s Word. In fact, God has given us explicit instructions in His Word on “how” to do just that (Deuteronomy 4:9-10; Deuteronomy 6:7; Deuteronomy 6:11-19; Ephesians 6:4).
The Results Of Religious Training
And we can plainly see the results of proper religious training (cf. Genesis 18:19; Deuteronomy 6:2; Deuteronomy 7:9; Psalm 33:12; Ephesians 6:3). To do otherwise will bring death and destruction upon our nation, our children, and all future generations (Deuteronomy 7:10; Isaiah 59:18; 1 Samuel 2:27-34; Proverbs 14:34; Isaiah 1:1-9; Jeremiah 7:21-34).
Conclusion:
Brethren, let’s unselfishly devote the proper allocation of our time in the training of our children, realizing the moral impact it will have upon the future of our great nation (Psalm 78:1-8).

The congregation is requesting member support of its Mission Fund as we provide an educational stipend to Bro. Phillip Morrison while he attends Sunset International Bible Institute full time for the next 18 months to train as a minister. We are asking members to commit/pledge at whatever amount your heart and ability can provide for this period of time. This is a commitment over and above your regular giving and we hope all members will participate to the level of their ability and heart for God. Our target is to provide $3,000 per month and all commitments, whether large or small, are helpful and appreciated.

2024 Mature in Heart Pennsylvania Dutch Country Excursion:
We are accepting registrations for the 2024 trip to Lancaster County Pennsylvania to see the September 19th showing of "Daniel" at the Sight and Sound Theater. The bus will be scheduled to leave at 4am on the 19th and estimated to return between 9pm and 10pm on the 20th. A minimum initial deposit of $120 is required to secure a spot. This should be completed by December 31, 2023 to allow us to plan for the number to attend. The deposit (and subsequent payments) can be made by cash, check (payable to Church of Christ in Roxbury), or electronically via our e-giving link: churchofchristinroxbury.org/e-giving. If you make your deposit or any subsequent payments electronically, please follow up with an email to cocroxbury@gmail.com with the subject line 2024 Pennsylvania Trip, and your name and payment amount in the body of the email.
The number of participants is limited by bus capacity. The overall cost of the charter bus, show ticket hotel and banquet has increased by $54 per person from 2023, however we have made some changes and restrictions to try to reduce the impact.
1. The minimum number for the event is increased from 24 to 30 (bus passengers). This will ensure that the bus cost per person is no more than $145.
2. The family-only restriction is removed for triple and quad hotel accommodations. However, we are requiring that all roommates be identified at the time of registration and the spots are not confirmed until all roommates have registered. There are also restrictions on refunds to make sure room costs are covered. More details are available upon request. Please see Bro. or Sis. Gallington, Sis. Keitrice Johnson, or Sis. Elizabeth Nagarajah with any questions.
Based on the changes described above, the following are the trip costs for 2024:
-
Quad Occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $352
-
Triple occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $371
-
Double occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $408
-
Single occupancy hotel room, banquet seat, bus seat and theater seat -- $535
-
Grand king hotel room, two banquet seats, two bus seats and two theater seats -- $859
-
Banquet seat and theater seat only -- $120
Please note that we need a minimum of 30 participants. We currently have 21 participants who have paid the required deposit. Please let us know immediately if you plan to participate but have not yet paid your deposit.
Please click here to access the online registration form.
