A Question Regarding False Teachers in Jude

A querist asks, “In Jude 1:12-13, what does the symbolism refer to in these verses with reference to the false teachers mentioned in Jude 1:4?”
The text in Jude 1:12-13 reads:
“These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves; they are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.“
A good Bible commentary to the above text would be 2 Peter 2:1-22, which further describe the characteristics of false teachers. With this thought in mind, the following are four descriptions of false teachers that Jude documents along with comments:
1) Clouds without water — Please note a similar phrase in 2 Peter 2:17, again referring to false teachers:
“These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, to whom the gloom of darkness is reserved forever.“
These false teachers were similar to clouds that contained the promise of rain, but no rain was in them (cf. Proverbs 25:14). They were like the folks who were “tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14).
2) Trees without fruit — Autumn is the season in which trees should begin bearing expected fruit — these trees were not bearing any fruit at all. These false teachers were similar in nature because they were promoting doctrines that would never bear spiritual fruit. Their doctrines would only bring spiritual death (Romans 6:23; cf. Romans 5:12; James 1:15).
3) Raging waves of the sea — Compare “raging waves of the sea” with James 1:6 and Isaiah 57:20. Isaiah uses the figure of the foaming sea waves as an illustration of the wicked. As the foaming sea waves bring up mire and refuse, so does the false teacher, spiritually speaking. This is a person who has no spiritual foundation (cf. Matthew 7:24-27), thus he is not dependable nor is he a reliable source for spiritual instruction – only for spiritual destruction (2 Peter 2:18-19; cf. Romans 6:16).
4) Wandering stars — These stars were obviously without direction or orbit. True teachers of God’s word will be stable, reliable, and dependable while false teachers will not possess these characteristics. Stars are often used symbolically as religious teachers in the Scriptures (cf. Numbers 24:17; 2 Peter 1:19; Revelation 1:16; Revelation 2:1; Revelation 22:16).

The congregation is requesting member support of its Mission Fund as we provide an educational stipend to Bro. Phillip Morrison while he attends Sunset International Bible Institute full time for the next 18 months to train as a minister. We are asking members to commit/pledge at whatever amount your heart and ability can provide for this period of time. This is a commitment over and above your regular giving and we hope all members will participate to the level of their ability and heart for God. Our target is to provide $3,000 per month and all commitments, whether large or small, are helpful and appreciated.

We will continue to offer two Sunday morning worship services to accommodate in-person attendees
The first service begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs until approximately 9:45 a.m.; the second service begins at 11:00 a.m. Our weekly Bible classes for all ages begin at 10:00 a.m. We will continue to livestream the 11:00 service on our YouTube channel, and we encourage members to utilize e-giving, even when attending in person. As noted under News & Notes, it is no longer necessary to sign up in advance to attend worship services in person.

2024 Mature in Heart Pennsylvania Dutch Country Excursion:
We are accepting registrations for the 2024 trip to Lancaster County Pennsylvania to see the September 19th showing of "Daniel" at the Sight and Sound Theater. The bus will be scheduled to leave at 4am on the 19th and estimated to return between 9pm and 10pm on the 20th. A minimum initial deposit of $120 is required to secure a spot. This should be completed by December 31, 2023 to allow us to plan for the number to attend. The deposit (and subsequent payments) can be made by cash, check (payable to Church of Christ in Roxbury), or electronically via our e-giving link: churchofchristinroxbury.org/e-giving. If you make your deposit or any subsequent payments electronically, please follow up with an email to cocroxbury@gmail.com with the subject line 2024 Pennsylvania Trip, and your name and payment amount in the body of the email.
The number of participants is limited by bus capacity. The overall cost of the charter bus, show ticket hotel and banquet has increased by $54 per person from 2023, however we have made some changes and restrictions to try to reduce the impact.
1. The minimum number for the event is increased from 24 to 30 (bus passengers). This will ensure that the bus cost per person is no more than $145.
2. The family-only restriction is removed for triple and quad hotel accommodations. However, we are requiring that all roommates be identified at the time of registration and the spots are not confirmed until all roommates have registered. There are also restrictions on refunds to make sure room costs are covered. More details are available upon request. Please see Bro. or Sis. Gallington, Sis. Keitrice Johnson, or Sis. Elizabeth Nagarajah with any questions.
Based on the changes described above, the following are the trip costs for 2024:
