What Do You Care About?
Neal Thurman
January 7, 2018
The greatest teacher in all the world cannot make a single student learn. The most eloquent, powerful, and scholarly preacher cannot himself establish a saving faith in even one listener. The most thoughtful, loving parent cannot guarantee faithful obedience to God from a child. All of these things are true because we cannot force a person to care. We cannot control the intent of one’s heart, even in those closest to us.

It is easy to become frustrated when things do not progress in the way or at the pace which we desire. This is certainly true in the church. We make efforts and attempts to encourage growth and edification in the church, or especially in a congregation. Yet, we look around and continue to see empty seats and the same few laboring in the various works of the church. We may be led to ask, “Why aren’t we growing?” or “What are we doing wrong?”

One may say, “Maybe it’s the way we go about things.” Jesus said, “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ (Matthew 11:18-19). So, which way was the way to reach the people?

“Well, we need to reach people where they are.” Acts 24:24-25, “...he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. 25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.” Acts 26:27-28 “King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe.” 28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.” Which of these unbelieving men did Paul fail to understand his place in world?

“We need something that gets folks excited so they will want to be a part of the church.” 1 Corinthians 1:22-23 “For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness…” Should the apostles have conducted grand healings and miracle performances to stir up the people?

Beloved brethren, sometimes it is not so much what we are doing or not doing, but what is happening with those who receive it. We are asking them, “What do you care about?” Because we cannot make them care. We cannot make them love the Lord. We cannot make them surrender their wills to Him. We cannot make them be faithfully to the Lord or the church that he bought with his own blood (Acts 20:28).

Some may allege that this is an excuse for not doing something. On the contrary, I will tell you what we must do, faithfully. “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature,” (Mark 16;15). “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching,” (2 Timothy 4:2). “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you,” (John 13:34). “...but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity,” (1 Timothy 4:12). “ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet,” (John 13:14). “ Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men...“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink…” (Romans 12: 15,18,20).

These are not insignificant things. In fact, sometimes they are quite difficult. They of vital importance because they proclaim what we care about. And these things are never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). Our challenge is to follow Paul’s words in Galatians 6:9, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

COVID Safety Protocols to Continue

As we continue to meet at the church building for worship on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m., we will continue the mask, social distance and temperature scan requirements previously put in place for attendance at in-person worship and classes until further notice. We will also continue to require advance sign up to attend in-person services to facilitate the notification process in the event of possible COVID exposure.
We continue to require that all attendees at our in-person worship services and classes comply with the following:

  • sign up to attend in advance to facilitate seating and contact tracing (link below);
  • wear masks (covering nose and mouth, NO VENTED MASKS);
  • maintain social distance (6ft); and
  • submit to temperature scans (fever free) to enter the building.
We are aware that not all members have been vaccinated and this requires that we continue the same safety protocols to keep ALL members safe – vaccinated and unvaccinated. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

We will continue to livestream the worship service on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. on our YouTube channel for those who are unable to attend in person. See below for link to our YouTube channel.

If you will be attending worship in person, please arrive at the building by 10:30 a.m. All attendees must be seated in the auditorium by 10:45 a.m. so that the livestream can begin promptly at 11:00.

Please spread the word to those who do not have internet access to complete the form online that they can contact Sis. Craigwell at 617-980-7830 or Sis. Gallington at 617-922-5987. By signing up to attend worship in person, you are agreeing to follow all COVID protocols that have been put in place for the safety of all. All attendees will have their temperatures scanned (touchless) upon entry into the building. Facemasks covering the nose and mouth must be worn by all attendees while on church property, both inside and outside. Vented masks are not allowed. All attendees must sanitize hands before entering the auditorium. We ask that all attendees bring their communion with them, but we will have supplies on hand if you forget.

To assist us with conducting the service in a decent, orderly and safe manner, we ask that you please not come to the building if you have not been added to the list of attendees. If you have been added to the list and find that you cannot attend, please let Sis. Craigwell or Sis. Gallington know right away so that your spot can be given to someone who can attend. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience.

Businesses and organizations can, however still require COVID protocols at their venues, and the protocols are still in place on public and private transportation and in all medical facilities.

All Massachusetts residents ages 12 and up are now eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and many facilities have walk-in hours. Use the link below if you need assistance scheduling an appointment or locating a facility.
