Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response
Last updated: March 18 th , 2020 @ 4:00pm

Iowa Heartland Habitat has the health and safety of our entire community set at our highest priority. We are following guidanc e from Habitat for Humanity International and local, state and national public health authorities to do our part in slowing the virus and to ensure that staff, clients, volunteers, supporters, and all of our neighbors stay safe and healthy.

We are doing the following to prioritize community health :

  • Implementing a "no contact" policy (e.g. handshakes, hugs, high fives, etc.)
  • Limiting large group gatherings greater than 10 people.
  • Enhancing cleaning and sanitizing at all of our facilities and sites.
  • Adapting our work to prioritize community health.
  • Requiring any employee or volunteer that is feeling ill to stay home.

As of today, March 18 th , 2020:

  • Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity's office will be closed to the public. We will not be taking any drop-in visits. If you need to contact us, please give us a call at (319) 235- 9946.
  • At this time our Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Hammond Avenue in Waterloo remains open for business. We are still taking donations, serving customers, and accepting volunteers.
  • We are continuing to build at our construction sites with the help of our volunteers.

If you are sick, please stay home for your own well-being and to mitigate the spread of illness to other community members such as customers, staff, and volunteers.
When any disaster hits — a storm, a disease, a financial crisis — it is always those who struggle most who suddenly find themselves struggling even more. They are our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends. They are families already living in unhealthy environments, those whose finances have been hit hard by housing costs, those newly vulnerable because of the economic shock waves that something like this sets off.

YOUR gift to Iowa Heartland today will help ensure families, like Jamie’s and the 13 other families working toward homeownership, will be able to finish building a safe and stable place to call home. Thank YOU for building homes and blessing our families with hope during this time of uncertainty.
As of March 18 th , we are continuing to host volunteers on our construction sites and in our ReStore . Group sizes will be capped at 10 people, including staff and volunteers. We are doing the following additional measures to keep you safe and healthy:

  • Site supervisors will sanitize tools each day, using disinfectant. Volunteers may be sent home early to allow time for sanitization.
  • We have increased cleaning and sanitization on sites and in our ReStore.
  • We have secured hand-washing stations at our construction sites.
  • We’ve asked staff to be particularly cautious on monitoring their health and taking sick time when needed. If your site supervisor is sick on the day of your volunteering, your crew may be canceled. Please understand this is in the interest of your health and we will work with you to schedule another volunteer date.
If you answer "YES" to any of the following questions, we ask that you please stay home and look to reschedule your volunteer shift with us to a later date:

  • Are you experiencing respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, or fatigue?
  • Have you had a fever (100 degrees F) in the past 24 hours?
  • Are you immunocompromised OR do you live with someone that is immunocompromised?
  • Have you OR anyone in your household traveled out of the country in the last 30 days?
  • Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19?

We support your decisions, including and up to a decision to temporarily suspend your own volunteering during this uncertain time.
We have made the following changes to upcoming events following recommendations made by the White House:

  • Women Build Event Breakfast (May 1st) has been postponed until further notice.
  • Open Houses & Home Dedications have been canceled.
