Region 2AAAA Literary CHAMPS
Congratulations to the Mary Persons High School Literary Team, coordinator and coach Mr. Hernandez, coach Ms. Spires and Ms. Lori Greenway, and accompanist Mr. Terry Clopton for being the 2-AAAA Literary Region Champions, ahead of 2nd place Howard High School.   Along with accompanying team members Grant Mitchell, Luka Rice, Cayton Sink, Liam Spence, Emmy Tane , Destiny Thompson, and James Wright, Mary Persons High School's team earned enough total points to claim the Region Championship title.
Trio, Rhetorical Essay, Humorous Interp., Dramatic Interp. and Domestic Extemp. winners will advance to the Georgia High School Association AAAA State Literary Competition that will be held at Veterans High School on Saturday, March 16th.

The Visual Arts department kicked off Youth Art Month with a reception held Tuesday, March 5 at the Fine Arts Center.  
The YAM Exhibit will be on display through the month of March.  

Monroe County Schools Visual Arts Department will host  the 
2019 Youth Art Month student exhibit from March 1-29 at the Fine Arts Center.

Congratulations to the Mary Persons Beginning Women, Men, Mixed and Advanced Women's Choirs, director Mr. Hernandez, and accompanists Terry Clopton and Katie Thomason for receiving straight superior ratings in performance and sight reading from every judge at the 2019 Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluations.
A Superior rating denotes "an outstanding performance worthy of distinction of being recognized as among the very best".
This is the 7th consecutive year of this outstanding accomplishment!

We would like to say a special thank you to our accompanying adults: Robin Head, Michelle Kelly, Belinda Penamon, Chris Peterman, Lisa Slaughter, Debra Smith, Sheri Stevenson, Fran Tapley, Conni Tane, Keith White and Gloria Williams.

FFA News

Mary Persons FFA competed in the Area III Wildlife Career Development Event on February 28th. The Wildlife Career Development Event allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in identifying aquatic plants and animals, Whitetail Deer Management, general wildlife, plant, and tool identification, and game bird identification. Senior team members include Jessica Hammock, Anna Grace Simmons, Cameron Lewis, and Jack Demarest. Junior team members include JT Andrews, Rachel Casteel, Katilyn Shields, and Evan Bertram. Both teams placed 1st in their division and will represent our region at the State contest in Athens on March 22 and 23. Jessica Hammock was the highest overall individual in the senior division and JT Andrews was the highest overall individual in the junior division. Anna Grace Simmons was 3rd overall in the senior division and Katilyn Shields was 3rd overall in the junior division. 

Mary Persons FFA competed in the Area III Nursery Landscape Career Development Event on February 28th in Fort Valley.  The Nursery/Landscape Career Development Event allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in plant materials, plant disorders, cultural practices, design and construction, supplies and equipment, safety, interpersonal relations, marketing and records and reports. Both Senior and Junior teams placed first in the area contest and will represent Central Region at the state contest March 22 and 23 in Athens, GA. Senior team members were Anna Hightower, Deyana Stokes, Austin Wiggins, and Cole Duncan. Austin Wiggins was highest scoring team member and placed 2nd overall in the Senior Division. Junior team members were Maradeth Leverett, Caroline Hampton, Gilean Michael, and Marlee Coffman. Marlee Coffman was the overall high individual and Gilean Michael was 2nd high individual.

Tennis News

The Tennis team took on region foe Spalding on last week at home and secured their second region win with ease.

The Tennis team played last Thursday afternoon against ACE at the Bulldog Tennis complex and both boys and girls achieved 5-0 victories. Winners for the boys included Micah, Preston, and Caleb Wilson for singles and the teams of Brandon Carter/Tucker Melton and Jimbo Finch/Carter Justice for doubles. Winners for the girls included Jackie Gore, Reagan Dorrity, and Julia Rainey for singles and the teams of Emma Cantrell/Josey Allen and Isabelle McCaskill/Lauren DeFore for doubles. The girls are now 6-1 and the boys are 5-2. 
Volleyball News

Attention Girls interested in Volleyball

Volleyball open gym/ conditioning  will be Monday & Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:10.  It will start (depending on basketball) March 11, 2019 in MPHS gym util April. 

A Mini Camp will take place April 15th-April 17th starting at 3:45 and go til 5.  Volleyball tryouts will be April 22, 24, 25 and 26th  3:30-5:30.
