In Guyana, becoming a nurse has long followed a traditional path. Students trained at one of three nursing schools, where teaching was largely classroom-based and relied on printed materials that were not always up to date. Clinical training depended on placements in a limited number of health facilities, often with inconsistent quality. Opportunities to practice critical skills before entering real clinical settings were scarce.

Govt recognises skills acquired outside classrooms, says CS Ogamba

The government recognises learning acquired outside traditional classrooms through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has said. Speaking during the opening of the 1st National Qualifications Conference in Nairobi, in a speech delivered by TVET Principal Secretary Esther Muoria, Ogamba said no Kenyan should be denied opportunities because their learning pathway was unconventional.

NOUN, Nursing Council meet to expand access to B.Sc Nursing Programme

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof Uduma Oji Uduma, has met with the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN), Dr Alhassan Ndagi, and his executive team to discuss expanding access to the B.Sc Nursing programme. The crux of the meeting was to reach a common ground that would allow every qualified individual who meets university entry requirements to pursue B.Sc Nursing, not just those already registered with the N&MCN.

Sri Lanka’s first national AI policy framework for higher education launched

The United States is partnering with Sri Lanka to help develop the country’s first national Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy framework for higher education. According to the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, the initiative is being carried out at the request of the University Grants Commission with support from the embassy and Sri Lankan stakeholders. The framework was soft launched on May 8 at the UGC in the presence of U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Jayne Howell, and Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Harini Amarasuriya.

UNESCO and University of Oxford launch a free global course on AI and Rule of Law
