The report Developing Vocational Education and Training with Artificial Intelligence examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to transform the development of curricula, qualifications and occupational standards in vocational education and training (VET). Commonly lengthy and resource-intensive, the development processes face increasing pressure to respond to fast changing labour market needs driven by digitalisation, green transitions and structural shifts as well as AI itself.

Shifra Ainomugisha from Uganda has been announced as the 2026 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year at the 2026 Commonwealth Youth Awards ceremony in London on 25 June. NBTE, Commonwealth of Learning validate 12 AI-generated eBooks for National Diploma Science Laboratory Technology programme

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), has successfully concluded the second phase of the Trainer-in-the-Loop Artificial Intelligence (TiL-AI) Workshop, resulting in the validation of twelve (12) eBooks for the National Diploma (ND) Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) programme. The workshop, held at the NBTE Headquarters in Kaduna, brought together subject matter experts from nine polytechnics across Nigeria, NBTE quality assurance officers, and representatives of the Commonwealth of Learning to review, validate, and enhance AI-assisted Open Educational Resources (OERs) for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Eswat­ini devel­ops over 3,300 digital learn­ing resources

The coun­try has developed more than 3,300 open edu­ca­tional resources and estab­lished a national learn­ing man­age­ment sys­tem as part of efforts to mod­ern­ise open school­ing and dis­tance edu­ca­tion. The devel­op­ments form part of a wider pro­gramme imple­men­ted by the Min­istry of Edu­ca­tion and Train­ing, the Emla­l­at­ini Devel­op­ment Centre (EDC) and the Com­mon­wealth of Learn­ing. Accord­ing to the case study ‘Scal­ing Open School­ing in Eswat­ini’, the ini­ti­at­ive emerged from efforts to strengthen edu­ca­tional access dur­ing and after the COVID-19 pan­demic.

President Museveni to establish 17 more industrial hubs as intake six enrolls 4,560 youth

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to establish 17 additional Presidential Zonal Industrial Skilling Hubs across the country in a move aimed at expanding vocational training opportunities and tackling youth unemployment. The development was announced by the State House as the sixth intake of students officially commenced training at the existing 19 Presidential Zonal Industrial Skilling Hubs.

According to him, the Ministry of Education is expanding digital learning opportunities through the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS) as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide across the country.

UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy: expanding digital and AI skills across TVET systems in Kenya

Launched in 2025, the programme aims to equip educators to use AI responsibly, effectively and confidently, while preparing students for a rapidly evolving labour market in which AI is becoming a foundational workplace competence. With implementation planned across six countries worldwide, the ambition is to train and certify over 500,000 teachers and students by the end of 2026, leveraging UNESCO’s network of TVET institutions. In Kenya, the programme was first rolled out with Machakos University and the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET), before expanding to 21 additional TVET institutions.

UN System and Caribbean Governments affirm development partnership under new cooperation framework

Caribbean governments and the United Nations set the stage for a strengthened development partnership with the presentation of the United Nations Multi Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF) 2027-2031 for the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean. The Framework was presented during the 2026 Annual Coordination Meeting of the United Nations MSDCF for the Caribbean, convened on 16 June 2026. Over the next five years, the new MSDCF will guide coordinated UN support to national and regional priorities, helping to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals and deliver meaningful results for people and communities across the region.

NIHERST–ILO study identifies STEM skills needs across emerging sectors

Technical education to become mandatory from class six: Education Minister

Education Minister A. N. M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan announced that technical education will be made mandatory from the sixth grade to develop a world-class and modern education system. He made this statement as the chief guest at the ‘Leaders Training Seminar’ organised by Rotary Bangladesh at the Agriculturist Institution Auditorium in Dhaka on Friday morning (June 19). The Education Minister stated that the government is working on modernising the education system and placing special emphasis on technical and vocational education.

Digital transformation in Papua New Guinea’s open schooling

In Papua New Guinea, many pathways for learners into secondary education do not begin in a traditional classroom. Instead, it starts through Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE), a system that has long served as a critical bridge for those who would otherwise be excluded. Since 2020, this collaboration has focused on building the foundations for online learning in Papua New Guinea. Through COL’s Contribution Agreements, targeted support has enabled FODE to begin that transition.
