Parking Notice - On Saturday, September 14th Luther will host the All American Cross Country meet on campus.  In addition, that day is the first home football game and Community Day. As a result there will be considerable traffic and parking congestion in the area of Regents Center starting at about 6:00 a.m. and into the early afternoon. Buses delivering teams to the event will be asked to park in the Barn lot and the City Pool lot so these lots will be restricted to bus parking only starting at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13th. Students who usually park in the Barn lot may park in any student or general parking area on the main campus through the weekend.

Wind Turbine Site - Students, faculty, and staff are reminded that Luther’s wind turbine is located on private property. As the turbine is on private property that also hosts an active quarry, please do not hike into the property for safety reasons. Hiking around the turbine without permission is considered trespassing. The Center for Sustainable Communities would be happy to arrange tours of the wind turbine, please contact  [email protected].

Center Stage Series: The Passing Zone - Providing some of the best entertainment in the Driftless Region, the Luther College Center Stage Series is back. The Passing Zone Saves the World is the premier event. It will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. From the Tonight Show to America's Got Talent, Luther alumnus Jon Wee '88 and Owen Morse are the hilarious duo who take juggling to a surprisingly dangerous level in an effort to "save the world." Watch as these five-time Guinness World Record holders and 18-time International Jugglers' Association gold medalists attempt to save the world through awe-inspiring stunts and side-splitting laughter. Senior Reception - All senior students and their families are cordially invited by President Jenifer K. Ward to the annual Senior Reception on Saturday, September 21 from 5-6 p.m. If you haven't already done so,  register online  before Monday, September 16. Co-hosted by Luther's Parents Council senior representatives.

CEPE hosts PLENtalk: Immigration Law Literacy - Join the CEPE for the screening of a webinar hosted by PLEN (Public Leadership Education Network) in DC. Immigration attorney Jodi Gill will discuss the laws impacting immigration policy, while debunking some of the most common immigration myths. Bring your lunch! Wednesday, September 11, Noon-1:00 p.m., Olin 214.

Human Rights Forum to be held October 27-29, Augsburg University - The Dean's Office and the CEPE provide funds for 20 students to attend the Forum (formerly named Nobel Peace Prize Forum), departing Sunday afternoon, returning Tuesday evening. This year’s theme is “Justice. Rights. Sustainability.” The first day of the Forum will focus on global issues, the second on domestic themes. PALS Informational Meeting - Do you like hanging out with kids? Do you have a couple hours each month to play games and participate in fun activities? Then PALS is for you! PALS is a community-organization that matches Luther College students with elementary school-age children in a mentoring relationship. Activities are organized monthly. If interested, please come to an informational meeting on September 17th or 18th at 7 p.m. in Valders 262 or email [email protected] for an application.

Davis Projects for Peace - Luther has been invited to participate in the summer 2020 Davis Projects for Peace.   Luther students interested in designing and implementing their own grassroots projects for peace are encouraged to submit proposals of 3 pages or less by  January 13, 2020. If selected, students receive $10,000 to implement projects somewhere in the world during summer 2020. For details and application information, contact Jon Lund,  [email protected] .

Nobel Conference - The theme for this year’s Nobel conference at Gustavus Adolphus College is  “Climate Changed: Facing our Future.”  The Dean’s Office has reserved 20 conference registrations. We will leave early (6 am) on Tuesday, September 24 and return around 6 pm on Wednesday, September 25. Hotel lodging is included but meals are on your own. Contact  Jim Martin-Schramm  or  Janine Brandt  to reserve your spot.

Brown Bag Lunch Book Discussion with Amy Blackstone - Dr. Blackstone will participate in a lunch hour book discussion on Friday, September 27th from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Dahl Centennial Union, Mott/Borlaug. The author will focus on publicly engaged gender scholarship and her new book "Childfree by Choice" where she delves into the childfree movement from its conception to today, exploring gender, race, sexual orientation, politics, environmentalism, and feminism, as she strips away the misconceptions surrounding non-parents and reveals the still radical notion that support of the childfree can lead to better lives and societies for all. The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and WGST programs are sponsoring this event. Receive a copy of the book or drop in for conversation only if unable to read the book.

Guest Lecture: "The Evolving Role of Sport in Developing Resilience" - How can we ensure youth develop resilience? Historically, organized sports have played an important role in helping participants develop methods to cope with loss, injury and self-doubt. Sports also provide a platform to practice goal setting, positive self-talk and mental toughness. Join head wrestling coach, Dave Mitchell, and other panelists for a discussion of the role of sports in building resilience and producing other life-long benefits. 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall (CRH). CEPE Book Groups - Prepare for Rebecca Traister's visit in October by reading her "best book of 2018 selection,"  Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women's Anger .  Find many other titles, including two more with authors coming to campus. Faculty, staff, students, and community members can learn more and sign up  here  for discussions to start soon! Books provided. Offered by The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.

PLEN Seminar: Women, Law, and Legal Advocacy - Join other undergraduate women from across the country, October 24-26 in Washington, DC. The "Women, Law, and Legal Advocacy" seminar is offered by the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), whose goal is to prepare college women for leadership in the public policy arena. Explore legal careers, legislative processes, craft your resume, and begin to build a professional network. Scholarships available for early applicants. Contact  [email protected]  for more information.

From Financial Aid - Register for any remaining fall semester classes before Friday, September 13th.  Financial aid for most students is based on full-time enrollment, which is at least 12 credits per semester.  If a prof or department head must add your class, keep in touch with that person to be sure the class is added for you. Financial aid adjustments will likely be required if you are not full-time by the 13th.  

Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes?  Zotero (a free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources with a click of a button. Bring your laptop to our workshop and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources (available for PCs and MACs). Adobe CC Change - Starting this fall, faculty, staff, and students need to sign in to use Adobe Creative Cloud applications (e.g. Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere) on lab/classroom/podium computers. Choose to “Sign in with an Enterprise ID”, using your Luther email address. This will be implemented on faculty/staff computers by mid-November and is due to changes in the Adobe licensing model. Transition to College Workshops - Want tips and strategies to feel at home at Luther? Join Counseling Service Outreach Assistants and RA's for workshops on Wednesday, Sept 11th 7:00-8:00PM in Brandt Social Lounge and 8:00-9:00PM in Ylvisaker Study Lounge. We’ll have an interactive conversation on how to ease the difficult transition to college, reduce homesickness, make and maintain relationships and find your fit at Luther! Welcome Friends and Neighbors Picnic - Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will host its 10th annual Welcome Friends and Neighbors Picnic on Sunday, September 15 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. The picnic is free and open to all, and will include local food, live music, games for kids, a marshmallow roast, and the chance to meet new people and enjoy good conversation. Everyone is welcome, including Luther College students, faculty, and staff. 

Attention Students Registered for Applied Music Lessons - If you decide to drop applied music lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for fall 2019: Dropping lessons:  by September 8 - No charge; by September 15 - $48 charge; by September 22 - $96 charge; by October 1 - $144 charge; after October 1 - Full charge/$530.    This schedule will be followed with no exceptions.

Christopher Cudworth, '79, "Road Trip" exhibit now open - A 40-piece exhibition of landscape artwork titled "Road Trip" is being staged at the Luther College Center for Faith and Life beginning Sept. 1 and ending after Luther’s Homecoming the first weekend in October. Road Trip features work in acrylic, pastel and watercolor with many of the works mounted in antique window frames.

Fall Community Day 2019 - Luther College and Decorah Bank and Trust invites faculty, alumni, parents, friends and their families to enjoy a day of food, fun, fellowship and sports at the 2019 Fall Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, on the Luther campus. Register for the picnic and to order free t-shirts for the kids online  or call the Alumni Office, 387-1861.

"RACE: Are We So Different?" Exhibit - Luther College presents the exhibit "RACE: Are We So Different?" as an educational opportunity and the kick-off event to a year-long conversation on racism. Experience the opening of the award-winning exhibit 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Center for the Arts atrium on Luther's campus. The original "RACE: Are We So Different?" exhibit is housed in the Science Museum of Minnesota, but now Luther College is inviting the campus community, local schools and the public to visit a condensed version of the exhibition. It will be open, by appointment, through the fall 2019 semester. For more information click  here .

"Youth and Class Struggle in 1970s Mexico" - In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Herrera-Calderon from UNI will be presenting "Youth and Class Struggle in 1970s Mexico" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. Herrera-Calderon will be speaking on the relationship between class and armed resistance in 1970s Mexico. He explores how working-class youth established themselves into a powerful political force against the authoritarian Mexican state. The event is co-sponsored by the history department and Latines Unides.  

ComedySportz Twin Cities - The Luther College Student Activities Council presents ComedySportz Twin Cities at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 , at Marty's Cyber Cafe on the Luther campus. The improvisational comedy show is fun for all ages and is open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m., it will cost you $7 for admission.
