Habitat for Humanity Pancake Feed - Enjoy some pancakes with with family and friends and support a good cause at the same time. Join us for the annual Habitat for Humanity Pancake Feed during Family Weekend. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children 5-12, and free for kids under 5. Purchase tickets through the Luther box office or at the door. All are welcome!

Financial Aid Notice - If you expect to receive Vocational Rehab funding but do not yet see it on your financial aid, we may need to contact Vocational Rehab on your behalf to request paperwork from them. Please stop in financial aid as soon as possible.

Martin Klammer, professor of English, presents "Steve Biko: Black Consciousness as Resistance to the Apartheid State" - Drawing inspiration from liberation movements across Africa and from Black Power and black theology in the United States, Black Consciousness inspired a generation of South African blacks to create community centers, clinics and other self-help organizations, and to stand up to the apartheid regime, often at the risk of their lives. Biko himself died while in police custody, but his life, writing and legacy lived on, helping bring about the end of apartheid and a new South Africa in 1994. Martin Klammer presents this talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 24 in the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall with reception to follow in Qualley Lounge. Sponsored by the Paideia Endowment, these events are always open to the public with no charge for admission. 

Soda Shoppe - Join SAC Entertainment and Ballroom and Swing for Soda Shoppe, Saturday, September 21 at 8:45 p.m. in Marty's. The event will feature performances from the Luther College Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra. Ice cream novelties are free with CAF or sold for $1.

Bishop Munib Younan visits Luther College - Bishop Munib Younan, Bishop Emeritus of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, will be on campus for a week of residency with Luther College and the Decorah community from September 26 – October 1. Bishop Younan will give a lecture, Thursday, September 26, 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall, open to the public at no cost. Calling all world travelers!  Join students from the International Studies program for our Open House: Thursday, September 26 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in the Williams Lounge of the Union. Students will share stories from their recent study abroad adventures, and answer questions about Luther's International Studies program--a major and minor that allows students to explore their interests in any corner of the world.

The Lucille Price endowed lecture this year will be presented by Professor Linda LeGarde Grover - Her talk, “Sweetgrass and Storytellers: Creative Narratives of Ojibwe Women’s Lives” will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, in Valders 206. LeGarde Grover, professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and author, will talk about how female leadership among the Ojibwe, a matriarchal culture, is taught and passed on from one generation to the next. The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by Women & Gender Studies.

How to Help a Friend Workshop - Students are welcome to join Counseling Service in an opportunity to learn how to recognize if friends are struggling with mental health and how to intervene. We will share what is and is not helpful, active listening skills, and provide some practice. No sign up required. Self-Care Workshop - Counseling Service Outreach Assistants will introduce students to the idea of self-care and lifestyle balance. The workshop will allow time for self-reflection and provide opportunities to learn about various ways to engage in self-care and create your own plan. Thursday, September 19 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Larsen Counseling Service Group Room (Near Larsen 120 Classroom). No sign up required.  

"Steve Biko: Black Consciouness as Resistance to the Apartheid State," is the first in the 2019-2020 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series Resistance and Resilience. Martin Klammer, Luther College professor of English, will deliver the lecture on Tuesday, September 24, at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall, with a reception to follow in Qualley Lounge. 

ITS Tip of the Month: Google Calendar "Working Hours" - Google Calendar recently turned on the “working hours” feature for everyone. Take a moment to review the working hours setting in your calendar and either disable them or manually set new hours. If you didn’t have specific working hours set in the past, Google tries to guess, and that guess might be wrong. Get directions here: support.google.com/calendar/answer/7638168 . Wind Turbine Site - Students, faculty, and staff are reminded that Luther’s wind turbine is located on private property. As the turbine is on private property that also hosts an active quarry, please do not hike into the property for safety reasons. Hiking around the turbine without permission is considered trespassing. The Center for Sustainable Communities would be happy to arrange tours of the wind turbine, please contact  sustainability@luther.edu.

Human Rights Forum to be held October 27-29, Augsburg University - The Dean's Office and the CEPE provide funds for 20 students to attend the Forum (formerly named Nobel Peace Prize Forum), departing Sunday afternoon, returning Tuesday evening. This year’s theme is “Justice. Rights. Sustainability.” The first day of the Forum will focus on global issues, the second on domestic themes. PALS Informational Meeting - Do you like hanging out with kids? Do you have a couple hours each month to play games and participate in fun activities? Then PALS is for you! PALS is a community-organization that matches Luther College students with elementary school-age children in a mentoring relationship. Activities are organized monthly. Davis Projects for Peace - Luther has been invited to participate in the summer 2020 Davis Projects for Peace.   Luther students interested in designing and implementing their own grassroots projects for peace are encouraged to submit proposals of 3 pages or less by  January 13, 2020. If selected, students receive $10,000 to implement projects somewhere in the world during summer 2020. For details and application information, contact Jon Lund,  lundjon@luther.edu .

Nobel Conference - The theme for this year’s Nobel conference at Gustavus Adolphus College is  “Climate Changed: Facing our Future.”  The Dean’s Office has reserved 20 conference registrations. We will leave early (6 am) on Tuesday, September 24 and return around 6 pm on Wednesday, September 25. Hotel lodging is included but meals are on your own. Contact  Jim Martin-Schramm  or  Janine Brandt  to reserve your spot.

Brown Bag Lunch Book Discussion with Amy Blackstone - Dr. Blackstone will participate in a lunch hour book discussion on Friday, September 27th from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Dahl Centennial Union, Mott/Borlaug. The author will focus on publicly engaged gender scholarship and her new book "Childfree by Choice" where she delves into the childfree movement from its conception to today, exploring gender, race, sexual orientation, politics, environmentalism, and feminism, as she strips away the misconceptions surrounding non-parents and reveals the still radical notion that support of the childfree can lead to better lives and societies for all. The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and WGST programs are sponsoring this event. Receive a copy of the book or drop in for conversation only if unable to read the book.

PLEN Seminar: Women, Law, and Legal Advocacy - Join other undergraduate women from across the country, October 24-26 in Washington, DC. The "Women, Law, and Legal Advocacy" seminar is offered by the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), whose goal is to prepare college women for leadership in the public policy arena. Explore legal careers, legislative processes, craft your resume, and begin to build a professional network. Scholarships available for early applicants. Contact  cepe@luther.edu  for more information.

"Youth and Class Struggle in 1970s Mexico" - In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Herrera-Calderon from UNI will be presenting "Youth and Class Struggle in 1970s Mexico" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, in the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall. Herrera-Calderon will be speaking on the relationship between class and armed resistance in 1970s Mexico. He explores how working-class youth established themselves into a powerful political force against the authoritarian Mexican state. The event is co-sponsored by the history department and Latines Unides.  

ComedySportz Twin Cities - The Luther College Student Activities Council presents ComedySportz Twin Cities at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 27 , at Marty's Cyber Cafe on the Luther campus. The improvisational comedy show is fun for all ages and is open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m., it will cost you $7 for admission - tickets available here.
