Social Emotional Wellness (SEW) Committee

As introduced in January, the Social Emotional Wellness Committee has partnered with Canvas Health and our School-Based Therapist, Beth Hopkins, to provide three Wellness Moments for students to engage in throughout the school year. The second Wellness Moment focused on the theme of Play and included a deck of cards to play a game as a family. We are excited to share that over 70 Burroughs students participated in practicing this skill and turned in their slips to be entered into the drawing. Three student names were drawn and the lucky kiddos were sent home with a new game to play. Thank you so much to everyone that participated! Stay tuned for the next Wellness Moment to be sent home in May, focusing on the theme Connect.

If you would like to learn more about the SEW Committee or join us, please contact Maggie Skrypek via email. All are welcome and we would love to have you!

New Math Club for Fourth and Fifth Graders!

If your fourth or fifth grade child enjoys math in school, is curious to learn new skills, and is an eager problem solver, this is a fun way to explore and expand their experience! "Advanced ability" is not required here, as all interested students are welcome. Every meeting will conclude with team-based competitions (small prizes awarded) where fairness and healthy sportsmanship will always be promoted!

This club will meet Friday mornings at 7:45 a.m. (April 14 - June 9) in the Burroughs media center. Once sign-ups are complete, further communication will be sent to Math Club families. This is a FREE Activity, but please only sign up students with intentions to fully participate.

Please sign up by completing the Google Form here. Sign-ups will remain open until Friday, April 7.

Caregiver Sexuality Education Event: Tuesday, April 18th from 6:30 - 8 p.m.

Not sure when or how to have “the talk” with your kids, or not sure what to say??? You’re not alone.

The Social and Emotional Wellness (SEW) Committee is excited to host a trained educator from the Family Tree Clinic who will deliver their PASE (Parents as Sexuality Educators) presentation to the caregivers in our Burroughs community. Through individual reflection and large group discussion, as participants are comfortable, caregivers will: Identify the values and messages they would like to share with their children; learn typical stages of sexual development for children and adolescents; and discuss effective communication skills to aid them in talking with their children about various sexuality topics.

Dessert and refreshments will be provided as well as childcare. Check-in starts at 6:30 p.m; Programming from 6:45 - 7:45 p.m. and final Q&A from 7:45 - 8 p.m. Registration is encouraged but not required - see link. We so hope to see you there!

Meet the Burroughs Volunteers

Lynsey Tjaden, Art Adventure

Lynsey Tjaden is an Art Adventure coordinator at Burroughs. She and her family have been a part of the Burroughs community for six years. She lives with her spouse, Josh, and has 2 kids at Burroughs, Henry in fifth grade and Oliver in third grade. They also have a 1.5-year-old dog named Winnie. Lynsey grew up in Cloquet, and Josh grew up in Minneapolis where he graduated from Washburn High School.

Lynsey loves the arts, so when she found Art Adventure, she thought it was the perfect fit. The Art Adventure program trains volunteer parents to introduce select pieces of art to kids in the classroom, and then brings the students to the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) to engage with the art in person. She was asked to join the planning committee when her current fifth-grader was in kindergarten and she had been looking for an opportunity to engage with the school community and kids. Five years later, and she's still connecting students and art!

Everyone enjoys Art Adventure week, and the kids really love learning about the artworks. Lynsey thinks it is always so fun to go to the Mia with the classes and see the kids engage with the docents and the art. If you are interested in learning more, email Art Adventure or check out the Mia website for more information.

Thank you, Lynsey, for all you do for the Burroughs community!
