The Business Council Needs Your Help – UI Fund Debt Threatens to Tax All Businesses
California’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) Fund debt is at a record $20B due to COVID-19 shutdowns. While these shutdowns were deemed essential to public health during the height of the pandemic, the resulting debt increase was not caused by business. Despite this, state leaders seem intent on letting businesses of all sizes foot the bill. This would mean higher per-employee taxes starting in 2023—$21 per employee, increasing by $21 each year thereafter. Taxes will soar to $1B by 2025 and $2B by 2028 impacting competitiveness and the ability for employers to provide good-paying jobs. Business leaders are calling for the 2023-24 budget to include a minimum of $1B of immediate tax relief to cover business tax increases for the next two years, and at least $3 billion to pay down a portion of outstanding debt. Employers are strongly encouraged to contact their state legislators and ask them to not leave businesses on the hook for the UI debt. For talking points, click here.
