City Symposium Focuses on Food Waste
In late October, the City of Plano hosted the Food Waste Symposium – “Feed the Need. Plant the Seed.” at the North Texas Food Bank. Commercial Waste and Recycling Supervisor Christopher Day led this collaborative event, bringing together food stakeholders at all levels—large food generators, food banks and nonprofits, compost operations, major corporations, restaurants, grocery stores, waste haulers, food distributors and college students. Every facet of food waste and recovery, from disposal and compost, to feeding the food insecure was discussed. Speakers highlighted innovative opportunities to significantly divert more food from the landfill. Presenters represented the Environmental Protection Agency, Fed Food Recovery, Food Maven, Greater Dallas Restaurant Association, North Texas Food Bank and Toyota Motor North America. Ongoing efforts are being made to work together to resolve food waste and recovery issues in Plano.
