Good morning {First Name},
Big news from The Honeycomb Project—our first Washington, DC programs are here, and registration is open!
Over the past year, we’ve been listening, building partnerships, and thoughtfully laying the groundwork to bring Honeycomb’s family volunteer model to the DMV. We’re thrilled to finally open the doors to DC families and begin this next chapter together.

Going forward, registration will open on the 15th of each month at 9 am for the next month’s projects. For example, March programs open on February 15.
About a week before your project, you’ll receive a prep email with everything you need, from family discussion prompts to what to wear. We make it fun, simple, and meaningful for every member of your family to participate.
What to Expect
Each month, we’ll offer a variety of fun, family-centered volunteer projects for kids ages 3–17. From hands-on group projects to youth-led leadership experiences, youth are empowered as capable contributors, and families support projects that address real needs for the organizations we serve.
In-Person Volunteer Projects
Hands-on volunteer experiences for children and parents to do together. These weekend projects typically engage 15–25+ volunteers, usually on Saturdays or Sundays for 1–3 hours. Examples include environmental projects at local parks or creating comfort items for pediatric patients. Whenever possible, projects will be open to kids of all ages, with engaging roles for teens too!
DIY/ Drop-Off Projects
Flexible opportunities that families can complete on their own time. Examples include stocking a Little Free Library or delivering a dish to a shelter for a community meal.
Community Drives
Organized supply drives that support our nonprofit partners. Many focus on gently used items and include kid-friendly actions—like cleaning out a closet to donate clothing—so children can participate without families needing to purchase new items.
We're excited to share that our first pilot projects include partnerships with Children’s National Hospital, Housing Up, DC Greens, and other incredible local nonprofits. These early collaborations will help shape and grow our DC hive, and we’ll continue expanding opportunities in the months ahead.
This launch is possible because of the early champions who believed in Honeycomb’s vision for DC. To our founding donors and Board of Directors, thank you. Your investment is doing more than launching programs. It is building the infrastructure, partnerships, and strong foundation that allow kids to show up for their communities in meaningful ways. Your support is already creating excitement across the region, and we are deeply grateful to be building this hive alongside you.
We’re excited to introduce Whitney Kelly, our Senior Manager of Programs and Partnerships. A Maryland native, Whitney brings deep experience in youth development and community engagement. She began working with kids as a teen in camps and aftercare, later earning a BS in Psychology and an M.Ed. in Global Perspectives. She has served as a middle school dean and Director of DEIB in both public and private schools locally. As our first DC team member, she’s eager to bring the energy and joy of Honeycomb projects to DMV communities.
Thank you for being part of this exciting new chapter. Your belief in this work is what turns a launch into a movement. We can’t wait to see this hive grow and to see you in the field.
With gratitude,
Kristina Lowenstein & Catherine Tannen
