High Holy Days 2018 / 5779
The High Holy Days are right around the corner and we're looking forward to having all of you here at Beth El, enjoying our services and celebrating together. For full schedule of services, including family services, please click here .
Saturday, September 1 at 9:00 p.m.
On Selichot, we usher in the powerful themes and stirring melodies of the High Holidays. This year, we will turn to the familiar text of the “Un’tane Tokef”, in which we visualize the Book of Life being written and sealed, determining the fate of every living creature. We will look for inspiration not only in the traditional words, but in the late Leonard Cohen’s brooding “Who By Fire?”, in which he called upon his Orthodox Jewish upbringing to examine the traditional text through a stark contemporary lens. Join us as we present Cohen’s music and a discussion of the text, along with Cantor King’s stirring Selichot service featuring cellist Evan Drachman, a contemporary instrumental ensemble, and the men of the Beth El Choir.
