Murder on the Mountain:
The Mysterious Case of Margaret Klem
Part of the “History Detectives” Series
May 15 at 7 pm
Join us to dissect the true crime murder that shocked the nation: the story of Margaret Klem, the last woman to be executed in the state in New Jersey in 1881. Was Margaret the calculating murderess and adulteress portrayed by the press? Or was she a battered wife pushed to the edge? Or was the West Orange immigrant, as she claimed to the end, innocent? Step into the past with us to hear how this case ignited public discussions on capital punishment, mental health, anti-immigrant sentiment, domestic violence, and women’s independence – that still resonate today. Join Dr. Peter Wosh to go behind the headlines of the murder of John Meierhofer and learn how Wosh and co-author Dr. Patricia L. Schall (1945-2020) uncovered this gripping story for Murder on the Mountain: Crime, Passion, and Punishment in Gilded Age New Jersey (New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, April 2022)

The Astonishing True Story of the Kopp Sisters with Amy Stewart
Part of the “History Detectives” Series
May 22 at 7 pm
Join us to hear the true story of three extraordinary women: Constance, Norma, and Fleurette Kopp, women in law enforcement whose exploits as crime-fighters and detectives in Bergen County, New Jersey, made newspapers nationwide. The first woman deputy sheriff in the country, Constance Kopp, alongside her sisters Norma and Fleurette, are the real women behind Amy Stewart’s Kopp Sisters novels, starting with Girl Waits With Gun. In 2012, Stewart stumbled across a 1914 newspaper article about them and went on to uncover their amazing history through genealogical archives, court records, old newspapers, and interviews with family members. From their story and her painstaking research, she wrote a critically acclaimed series about the Kopp sisters and their adventures in crime-fighting. Stewart will take us into her research and writing process to bring history to life, and share photographs and stories about these remarkable women and the fascinating historical background that shaped their world a hundred years ago.

How can art be an instrument of change? Find out at Stitched Together: A Quilting and Social Justice Workshop with Maureen Kelleher, co-founder of the Social Justice Collaboration Quilts Project, whose goals are to support artists who work behind prison walls and give voice to the political consciousness of imprisoned and free quilters. After a guided conversation about SJCQP’s work in the exhibition Stitching Time: The Social Justice Collaboration Quilts Project, participants work on an individual patch to contribute to a collaborative quilt. All materials are provided. No sewing or arts experience is necessary. Free and open to the public. The same workshop is offered on two dates (April 23 or May 1), but space is limited: please register for only one date.
On April 24, the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra presents RESISTANCE, an exploration of composers and music that fought against occupiers and invaders.
