FROM THE RECTOR . . .

My Siblings in Christ -

A BLESSED HOLY WEEK to each of you! This is a group photo of your gathered DioMass clergy members having renewed our holy vows during a lovely service at the Cathedral.

New Bishop, new traditions, including the request that each clergy member vest and process from the Paulist Center on Park Street, through the Common to arrive at our Cathedral where our Bishop and the Bishop of the Lutheran Church awaited us. We (literally) stopped traffic! It is a wonderful new tradition that allowed us to connect with colleagues during this holiest of weeks. The Rev’d Liz Steinhauser somehow managed to gather the giant group for this photo, and was patient as we squished in together – ever mindful of needing and wanting to be in excellent health for the duration of Holy Week...

I am grateful to have a new bishop and her new traditions to enhance our Holy Week. Please place the service on your calendars for next year. It is a gorgeous service and a reminder of the promises and calls that each of your Massachusetts clergy members affirmed and answered as we navigated the lengthy discernment process. Next year, I hope we can have a St. Andrew’s photo on those same Cathedral steps!

Bishop Whitworth preached about how divisive and uncomfortable this time is and how important it is to invite our communities to experience our familiar Holy Week stories anew. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow night’s Agape Supper with as many of you as possible. Thank you in advance to all of the generous cooks who will offer us salad, soups, bread and simple dishes for our meal. We will pray in thanksgiving for our gathering, our nourishment and this community before we move to the sanctuary for our worship service.

I am very grateful for all of the helpers who have been at the St. Andrew’s campus this week, preparing us for the services ahead. I’m learning about our history and traditions and appreciate the opportunity to participate in Friday’s Tenebrae service, which is new to me.

Easter promises to be extraordinary this year for a bunch of reasons, including both Western and Eastern churches will celebrate it on the same day (most years the Gregorian calendar, followed by the West and the Julian calendar, followed by the East do not sync!) We also have great fun planned for our children, and everyone can count on this crescendo of Lent and the shift to the season of Easter to include joy, bells, laughter and LOTS of grace!

I’m excited to bring the A-Word back into our sanctuary and worship, and look forward to our kidlets returning it from its Lenten Hiding Place!

We’ll need a few extra ushers on Sunday. If you feel called to this vital ministry, please send me a text or e-mail, or give me a call. I’d love to make sure that every person who joins us on Easter Sunday feels welcomed, appreciated and knows that they are in the right place!

God bless you in your on-going Lenten observances. While I plan to keep feeding the birds and enjoying my brief daily walks, I am very much looking forward to casting aside a few of my other Lenten choices!

May we each find the steps we take to accompany Jesus to the cross and beyond challenging, clarifying and, in God’s time, rewarding! Amen+

I got to recess out of the Cathedral with one of my favorite friends and good trouble makers – The Rev’d Megan Holding of the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington.

Kitchen Volunteers Requested: Do you make delicious coffee? Are you known for your hospitality skills? Our kitchen doyenne Janet Keane is taking a well deserved break this Sunday AND will assure you that any answer to the opening questions is terrific. You can be TRAINED! For Easter Sunday we are seeking 2-3 volunteers to make coffee and put out treats for our holiday guests. We know we'll have parents awaiting the completion of the children's Egg Hunt, first time visitors with us and many people who will appreciate an Easter Treat after our joyful 10 am service. If you've ever been kitchen-curious and wondered whether this volunteer opportunity is for you, please give it a try on Sunday. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give Rev'd Amy a call - (781) 422-4112!

An Enlightening Conversation:

I just completed a call with an inquirer (NOT a recent Inquirer's Class graduate) who was surprised to hear that Sunday is Easter. How do I know that it surprised him? Because he said he thought Easter is in May! The point of this brief aside is to suggest that the next four days offer a special opportunity to invite friends, family and acquaintances to church. How many people in your life are crestfallen or bewildered by the news that surrounds us? Not sure what to do about it? Invite them to church. I think that millions of people are seeking something deeper to help provide ballast for the journey ahead, and an Easter invitation to join you at church may be a perfect first step. My call was an important reminder of how foreign what we do has become. God's invitation is for everyone. I hope that you'll extend one on Jesus' behalf to anyone you know who will appreciate that you are thinking about them.

PLEASE WEAR YOUR NAME TAG DURING HOLY WEEK. Part of being a welcoming community is being able to greet folks by name. A key element of connecting with one another is being seen and known, and our names are vital ingredients! If you NEED a new nametag, please let Joanne know by NOON on Maundy Thursday.

EASTER OFFERING for St. Andrew’s: See envelopes in Narthex and in pews.

We have learned of the passing of a longtime beloved St. Andrew's parishioner and the loved ones of other St. Andrew's family members.

Bonnie Teetsell's daughter called to let us know that her mother passed away this week in Tennessee. We will pass on more information as we receive it.

Kathy MacDonald's mother, Jean Krous passed away. Her memorial service will be at St. Andrew's later this sping.

Bob Shaw's father, Robert W. Shaw, Sr. and Joan Shaw's mother, Sanchen Kenney passed away recently.

Dear God, we pray to you for Bonnie, Jean, Robert and Sanchen and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Relocation Assistance:

St. Andrew's is partnering with First Parish of Norwell to assist three families transitioning to Transitional and Long-term housing (stay tuned for moving date). If you are interested in supporting this effort please contact Rev. Amy and/or use the LINK to Donation List on the parish website home page.

Last Sunday were debuted our Accessibility Area in the Narthex. To the right of the front entrance to church you will find tools to help make the bulletin text larger (magnifying sheet), walking more stable (a walker with wheels), the service louder (an amplifier with headphone) or the service more quiet (two pairs of noise cancelling headphones).

We are excited to continue to have this area evolve as we grow in our ability to make kindness loud, visible and comfortable for all who wish to worship with us in person.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions for additional items that might be helpful in the accessibility area!

The Chosen Group Watch Party & Potluck will reconvene in May. Stay tuned.

The NEXT meeting of our Book Group will be THURSDAY May 1 at 7pm. We will continue discussing the book Being Mortal, by the extraordinary surgeon and writer Dr. Atul Gawande. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE FINISHED THE BOOK to join us.

If you are curious, please join us. We will meet in person in the Vestry Room, below the Parish Hall and we will have a Zoom link available for you to join us on-line on the parish website calendar HERE.

LOOKING AHEAD . . . COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Mother's Day Walk for Peace (MDW4P) is a beloved Boston tradition honoring the lives of our loved ones who have been murdered. It is the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute’s (LDBPI) largest fundraising event to grow and sustain our services, advocacy and training. LINK to more information.

This year’s theme is "Cultivating Cycles of Peace.” In our society, we are constantly looped into cycles of violence that overshadow the transformative power of peace. We have the agency to cultivate these cycles by empowering survivors, supporting returning citizens and their families and investing in Generation Peace, the young people shaping the world.

There will once again be a Team from St. Andrew's walking. Will meet at the church (time and place TBA).

Click on the Make Kindness Loud block to go to the St. Andrew's Team -- you can register as a walker or be a sponsor.

St. Andrew's will once again have a table at the Hanover Pride Day. Plan to join us to "Make Kindness Loud" in our community.
