FROM THE RECTOR . . .

Dear Siblings in Christ,

We are closing the books on another extraordinary Sunday service that included the beginning of Pride month, our connection to the prayers Jesus offered his disciples – and us, AND the opportunity to sing Happy Birthday to Maddie Whitney, whose sister Katie, reminded us is celebrating her Half-Birthday this Friday. Happy Half Birthday Maddie – and way to be an awesome big sister Katie! You may remember that we had the privilege of baptizing Maddie earlier this year, and Katie was very helpful in pouring the water into the font, and overseeing much of the proceeding.

We are also looking ahead to a full and fantastic week that includes our joyful presence at Hanover Pride (3-7 on Saturday) a Sunday service that celebrates Pentecost AND two baptisms, and the return of the prayer doves to the sanctuary.

Pentecost is the official marking of the birth of the church. The time when the Holy Spirit descended upon the people like a hurricane of rushing wind and everyone gathered could hear and understand one another in their own native language. To reenact that sound, we will have guest readers offering the same scripture lesson from the book of Acts in different languages. If YOU can read Hebrew or Greek and would like to participate as a reader on Sunday, please let me or the office know by 7pm tomorrow night – and thank you for being part of this wonderful celebration.

Looking ahead, on Thursday June 12th, at the Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole, Bishop Julia Whitworth will confirm Jen Mitchell and Kristi Peak-Oliveira and receive Dane Ripellino and Chuck Fiorentino from the Catholic church in which they were raised, into the Episcopal church – YAY! This too is a great cause for celebration. The service will be at 5:30pm in Falmouth, at the Church with a lovely reception to follow.

Please enjoy this jam packed edition of the Call – including the voting results that will provide the shape for our summer programming in Hanover.

Sending you God's peace,

Amy+

Calling All Toddlers to Teenagers --

Come rehearse at 9:15 a.m. in the parish hall this Pentecost Sunday before the service and then lead us in song at the offertory!

All children are welcome and encouraged to participate in our children’s choir.

The next celebration of Baptisms will be this coming weekend on Pentecost Sunday, June 8.

Come join us on this joyous occasion of the baptism of Kelly Michael Warren and George Werner Hauser II.

Our own Janet Keane stood in solidarity with Cookie Monster at a recent protest in Quincy. Join Janet and others who will participate in the NO KINGS gatherings on June 14th. The No Kings celebration in Plymouth promises to be energetic and well attended. These actions will convene in towns all over the Commonwealth. Take your pick and celebrate Flag Day/No Kings Day/President Trump's 79th birthday in any way that strengthens your faith and brings you joy!

"Celebrate Juneteenth With Us!"

"Celebrate Juneteenth With Us!"

The day is nearly here! On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Texas and declared that all enslaved people were free—finally fulfilling the Emancipation Proclamation. This moment is now marked as Juneteenth, a jubilee of freedom long delayed but never forgotten. Come be part of our community as we celebrate this milestone, giving thanks for all who worked to spread the promise of emancipation across the country. We have many to thank, and much work to do.

On Thursday, June 19, 2025 we will set aside time to celebrate JUNETEENTH – and you are invited! Join the community of Hanover, MA and the members of our parish and celebrate with the Rt. Rev. Julia Whitworth and the joyful witness of the Church.

Our Juneteenth Celebration will be one of music, prayer, reflection and community on Thursday, June 19 beginning at 1:00 PM. Let’s honor the past and recommit ourselves to a future rooted in freedom, dignity, and God’s justice for all.

Our celebration of Juneteenth is a witness to the liberating love of God—a public act of remembrance and joy, rooted in the belief that every person is made in the image of God.

You are encouraged to read this outstanding report from the Historical Society about Slavery in Hanover between 1727 – 1783.

With the wisdom of our Vestry and some shared enthusiasm for revitalizing our Summer Fair, we are combining these two great opportunities and we are HOSTING A JUNETEENTH COMMUNITY PICNIC AND CELEBRATION with Bishop Julia Whitworth on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 1:00 PM!

Thanks to all who attended our two planning sessions, our Juneteenth Celebration will include . . .

We have hired the band “Brimstone Corner” to join us (@brimstone_corner).   Everyone wants them and WE’VE got them 1-4. We will also dedicate a tree for our clergy members who have served at St. Andrews. We will have yard games and Great Food!

THE VOTES ARE IN!!

Here is a sneak preview of what Summer 2025 will look like at St. Andrew’s

  • We WILL have a summer yard sale – YAY!
  • We WILL have evening prayer and potluck
  • We WILL schedule gardening days and Nature walks
  • We WILL establish a weekly bible study gathering
  • We WILL host Vacation Bible School

These were our biggest vote getters. We may also scatter a movie night or two in, between now and Labor Day, and we can definitely revisit some of the program options that received support as possibilities for the Fall. THANK YOU so much to everyone who participated and took the poll. Please stay tuned for dates and times for these marvelous summer programs!

Dove Project for Pentecost - Thank you to all who filled out doves. We will lift your intentions up to the Holy Spirit this coming Sunday as your doves hang in the sanctuary in tulle.

HELP WANTED . . .

We have a St. Andrew’s Church Chore list that includes activities with wide ranging time and talent requirements. Our current list ranges from installing bug screens in the belfry to power washing the side of the church to repairing our secret garden bench to replacing the crumbling stones on the North Side stone wall. Each of these activities will make an important difference in our shared community’s life. If you have time and the inclination, please give Joanne Bibeau, our Parish Administrator a call to see what chore you might like to check off our list. All help is welcome! This chore list will be published on our website in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

JUNE’s PRIDE Activities begin this coming SATURDAY!

Saturday, June 7th is Hanover’s 5th Annual “Don’t Hide The Pride” celebration at Forge Pond Park in Hanover from 3pm – 7pm. Under the visionary leadership of Dianne Nicol, we are expanding our presence to include a photo booth, lots of give-aways, and a joyful presence. We would like to have 3 teamsone for set up 2pm – 3pm, one for manning the booth 3pm – 5pm and one to cover the booth through close and packing up 5-7pm. You are invited to help for any portion including all of that time. Sign up using this LINK. Thank you in advance for being part of our proud presence for Pride Month!

St. Andrew’s has a wonderful tradition of celebrating June’s Pride activities in both Hanover and Boston. This year, our new Bishop with the guidance and assistance of Rev’d Amy’s friend and colleague ,The Rev’d Liz Steinhauser, is planning a rambunctious and joyful presence at Boston’s Pride Parade on Saturday, June 14th. Information can be found here. Please sign up to join the St. Andrew’s contingent, Making Kindness Loud in Boston!

Sean Glennon attended the annual meeting of the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (BAGO), held earlier this week at Christ (Episcopal) Church in Cambridge / Harvard Square. As a member of BAGO's executive committee, Sean was a member of the event committee, which included dinner; recital; and business meeting. The church organ is a magnificent Schoenstein & Co. instrument, with three keyboards, 69 stops (draw knobs), and over 2,800 pipes.

Sean is pictured here with Cathy Meyer, Dean of BAGO, and Fred MacArthur, longtime former organist at historic Old South Church in Copley Square. Fred is considered by many to be the Godfather of BAGO.

YOU ARE INVITED!

Each Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 pm I will be participating in a vigil in New Bedford to demonstrate the loving presence of Episcopalians who are supporting the immigrant communities there who are living in fear. You saw the national headlines that followed an ICE agent going rogue and smashing in the windshield of an asylum seeker. The fear that has spread through this neighboring community is palpable, and the Massachusetts Council of Churches has invited faithful folk to gather in love and solidarity – to hold a vigil, rather than a protest.
