Cardinal Character Trait of the Month: COOPERATION

"No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it."

– H.E. Luccock

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Throughout the classrooms, students have been studying Black History Month by learning about important historical figures (scientists and inventors in Science, dancers and artists in History...) and discussing the importance of diversity and different perspectives -- even in Preschool! This beautiful art piece is a combination of handprints from every Preschooler at CES with a lovely writeup by lead 2s teacher, Mrs. Jeanne Durso.

A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear CES Family,

We are heading into the last week of a very busy February. Fortunately, we have a glimmer of light to look forward to as the last few weeks of winter wind down. This Friday is a brand-new community event launched by our energetic Parents’ Association: International Night! It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the diverse cultures and heritages at our school that make this community so enriching. Bring the whole family and go table by table tasting delicacies from countries such as India, Ethiopia, Germany, Sri Lanka, and even some southern US specialties. You may participate as well and bring that old family traditional dessert or grandma’s special family curry. Just register your heritage and dish here so we can reserve a table space for you. There will be country displays, traditional clothing, and maybe even some traditional dance! Come share in this cultural celebration!

Tomorrow is an important day in the administrative offices. It is the current family re-enrollment due date to secure student spots in their classes for next year. Janet Gerber and I are always eager to receive the affirmation from current families as they place their trust in our school for another year. I know that sometimes parents are concerned by the small class sizes we have in a few grades, worried that their child may be limited in peer social interaction. In my ten years at CES as a teacher, parent, and administrator, I have been able to observe our students’ growth each year in both small and large classes, and I have come to a conclusion about the smaller classes. Students with a smaller CES peer group develop tight bonds with their classmates and also form strong bonds with students older and younger than they are. They don’t feel limited or lonely. Yes, there are sometimes social conflicts that are hard to avoid because of the small class size, but they learn how to navigate these conflicts and develop skills that help them to gain confidence in themselves. The benefit of our small community environment is that students have a multitude of people in our school of different ages and roles that they consider part of their circle and whom they trust. They bond with our entire community, and they carry that with them when they fly off to larger area high schools. No one who graduates from CES has ever said, “I wish I had more friends there.” The friendships our students form here are deep, long lasting, and real. CES will always be that permanent foundation of love and acceptance that our students will cherish well into their adult years.

Warmly,

Nicole Stone
