5th Grade Sun Tracking Study
|
The 5th graders are studying the movement of the sun. To get an idea of just how much the sun moves across the sky, they created a tracking diagram. Yesterday, they stepped outside each hour and, using compasses to align their trackers with true north, marked where the sun was at that time. After a cloudy start to the day, the sun came out they were able to collect plenty of shadow data.

A Message from the Head of School:
Dear CES Families,
There is a lot going on at school this week in anticipation of the gala,
Denim and Diamonds
, which takes place this Friday night in the Murdock Room and Dining Room. You should have received the link to the online catalog where everyone, even those who cannot join us in person, can start placing bids for the various items from the live auction and the class artwork. I am looking forward to this evening when so many of us are able to come together for a lot of fun and to raise money to support the school we love so much. If you are not able to come, we will miss you! Please show your support by participating in the online bidding.
Another way to participate is by making a donation to the Raise the Paddle. As in the past two galas, we will use the Raise the Paddle to continue whittling away at the various projects outlined in the capital campaign initiative,
Firm Foundation Bright Future
.
Our goal this year is to raise money to install an elevator in the lower school building
. Why an elevator??? Well... in case you had not noticed, the church building is on four different levels and has many, many steps. When we have a student on crutches, or we have visitors who use wheelchairs (Grandparents'/Special Friends' Day, musicals, Christmas concerts, graduation, awards ceremonies, etc.), it is incredibly difficult to navigate the building. To get from the church to the Dining Room/Murdock Room, or vice versa, people have had to go outside. On cold or rainy nights, this is really unpleasant. So, with the elevator, people will be able to get from the church level to the Dining Room/Murdock Room level quickly and easily. It will be a tremendous help to the school, as well as, the church.
The cost of the elevator is close to $200,000. We have already raised a nice portion towards it. Our most recent large FFBF donor expressed a specific interest in the elevator, so we are earmarking $75,000 of that donation towards the elevator. We have applied for a grant from the state of Maryland that we believe will equal approximately $25,000. I am aware of at least two donations totaling $1,200 specifically given for the elevator. There may be more. My hope is that we can raise a minimum of $25,000 during the Raise the Paddle. This would put us at $126,200, and we'll continue looking for individuals to help us close the gap.
If you cannot make it to the gala, please show your support through your financial contribution, at whatever level you can, towards the betterment of CES today and tomorrow! If you are coming to the gala, please come ready to bid often and bid high! Go Cardinals!!

Middle School Ski Trip 2019
This biennial event is a much-loved tradition at CES. Our entire Middle School rides up to Whitetail Resort on a big comfy tour bus; there the students spend the day learning how to ski or snowboard, enjoying hot chocolate in the ski lodge, and spending time with their friends. For our graduating 8th graders, this is an especially meaningful trip. At CES, we work hard AND play hard!

CEC Shrove SUNDAY Pancake Breakfast & Mardi Gras Celebration
SUNDAY MORNING *MARCH 3rd*
8:30am - 1:00pm
Mardi Gras (translated from French, means "Fat Tuesday") is a traditional "last-chance blowout" before Lent. It was used as a time to empty the kitchen of all fattening and rich food before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Thus, pancakes, syrup, toppings, sausage, and applesauce are a Shrove tradition... and we'll celebrate on Sunday!
Bring friends, family & neighbors - it's a great time to introduce someone to one of our best traditions and as a special bonus... a chance to meet our NEW RECTOR, REV. LISA ZAINA!
