A Message from the Head of School:

Dear CES Families,

Life continues to be very busy at CES. In addition to various field trips and projects, STEAM Week is off to a great start. There have already been presenters here talking about cochlear implants, environmental conservation, vaccines, and computer technology. Later this week, students will get to see a geiger counter up close, hear from a wildlife biologist, and visit the 8th grade Science Fair.

As you know, CES is a 2019 Best of Bethesda Top Vote Getter in two categories, one of which is "Best Private School for Music/Arts." We are certainly staying true to our reputation. There is beautiful student artwork hanging all over the walls of CES; the Music Department is getting ready for their upcoming musical performances of The Journey of the Noble Gnarble on March 20 (Lower School), and Mary Poppins, Jr. on April 12 (Middle School); and the 8th graders performed Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors at the Folger Library. They did such an amazing job and received a number of awards for their performance. Below is a description of the event written by 8th Grade Civics teacher, Mrs. Susan Scola:

The Eighth Grade class had the exhilarating opportunity to participate in the Folger Secondary Shakespeare Festival on Tuesday, March 12th. This annual multi-day festival celebrating the language of the Bard invites five to six schools a day to perform a 22 minute long edited version of a Shakespeare play, receive feedback from theatre professionals and peers, watch other students perform, and work collaboratively with students from other schools. CES actors performed The Comedy of Errors, and they were wonderful!

At the end of the activities, recognition is given to each school, and students receive a copy of a Shakespeare play and a tee shirt that reads, "I speak iambic pentameter, I speak rhymed couplets, I speak blank verse, I speak Shakespeare." In addition, a number of awards are handed out. The CES cast was recognized several times.
    • The "Dynamic Duo" award for a funny partnership went to Ella K. and Justin N. for playing the twin Dromios.
    • For her "witty, droll" performance as the abbess, Ani D. was recognized with a "Powerful Presence" award.
    • Nate M., who had more lines to memorize than anyone else in his role as Egeon, was recognized with a "Taming the Text" award for mastering telling the story in Shakespeare's language.
    • The "Excellence in Acting" award, for her "powerhouse performance" was given to Charlotte L. who played Adriana, demonstrating great agility in vocal as well as physical comedy.
In addition to the recognition these individuals received for their performances, CES received the most prestigious award of the day.  Entitled the Brian Cabe Spirit of the Day Award it is given in memory of a young man who loved acting and participated in the Festival. He sadly died of cancer at age 19. This award is not only for a performance on stage but also recognizes enthusiastic participation in offering feedback to other actors and demonstration of a positive attitude in undertaking the activities of the day. For their "positive presence" on our Festival day, Christ Episcopal School was given this award.

It was an amazing day of learning, celebrating accomplishments, and making new friends as well as a chance to demonstrate Cardinal Character away from school.

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed. D.

Other Highlights This Week

The Preschool Bears visited the Great Harvest Bread Company as part of their Bread Around the World unit.

Kindergarten's Study of the Seven Continents continues as they explored South America this week, and we love to use our culturally diverse CES community to help us learn! Gus and Lucia's mom, Fabiola Costello came to the class to teach them all about her home country, Peru! They learned about the climate, cultural dress, Inca history, and food from this beautiful country. The class also enjoyed trying on traditional Peruvian clothing and food.
