From the Rector:
Annual Meeting
grounds us in our Parish roots

Dear Calvary Parish,

This Sunday marks the 163rd annual meeting since the founding of Calvary Parish.

Each year, we celebrate how God has been at work in and among us at this annual gathering. We'll look back on the past year and give thanks for the ways the Holy Spirit has been in our midst.

I wondered what Calvary Parish looked like over 160 years ago . What did the founding members celebrate after their first full year as a parish together? I found this in the old register we still have on file:

From 1856-1863, the Reverend William Lhoyd was rector.

Mr. Lhoyd officiated the first parish wedding on June 10, 1856. It was the marriage of his daughter, Maryanne.

There were just 17 communicants , plus their children, in the church then (now we have around 200 members) .

In the first full year at Calvary, there were four baptisms , two funerals ( including the funeral of Thomas Procter, son of William and Sarah Procter ), and just the one marriage .

The Pledge and Plate giving the first full year at Calvary totaled $569.21. (That's $168,156 in today's numbers, adjusted for inflation.)

Come on Sunday to the Annual Meeting, bring a dish to share, and learn what people will be finding in our archives in another 156 years: the blessings of 2019 and hopes for 2020.

Gratefully,

The Reverend Allison English, Rector
