Notes From Sunday School

The Godly Play curriculum leads children through exploration of various parts of the Bible and the life of the church throughout the program year. Beginning in the fall we hear stories from the Old Testament and then continue our learning through the Christmas story and the Parables. After Easter we move on into New Testament stories and we listen throughout the year to lessons that instruct on church liturgy and practices.
Lent is a season in which we focus on a series of lessons called “The Faces of Easter”. This series picks out snapshots of the life of Jesus from his birth, through his baptism, temptation and works of compassion through to his death and resurrection.

While these lessons are in themselves very important to hear, my favorite part comes just after the storyteller has finished the story for the day. At that point, the children look around the room at all the other lessons and find something to bring back to the story and explain the connection they found. It is a joy and a wonder to see the formation of faith in such a setting and to share in uncovering the big message of Jesus’ life.

The power in the insights of 3-12 year-old children is amazing, and I am privileged to hear them. Thank you for your care and support of these youngest members of our community of faith.
