From the Rector

This coming Sunday marks the beginning of the third week of Advent. It has been known for centuries in the Christian Church as Gaudete Sunday, which translates to “Rejoice Sunday.” The deep blue color of season lightens to a rose pink this week, and the church is called to rejoice in the Coming of Christ.

We have many reasons to rejoice at Calvary this season. Reverend Olivia shared with you earlier this fall that the Vestry commissioned the Outreach Team of Calvary to carefully discern how Calvary might best care for the greater community with a budget surplus in 2020 (expenses have been down across the board, as the pandemic has altered our operational expenses significantly).

I am pleased to continue to share more with you how Calvary discerned to alleviate homelessness in some very significant ways with our budget surplus (rather than keeping the funds for ourselves). Both Interfaith Hospitality Network and an organization called Bethany House Services met the criteria our Outreach Team discerned was Calvary’s top outreach priority: to shelter vulnerable people. Susan Schiller, the CEO of Bethany House will be sharing in the sermon with me on Sunday, sharing the Good News of “the rough places being made plain” directly through Calvary’s ministry.

Below you’ll find another way we can experience joy Gaudete Week: Parishioner Jane Paraskevopoulos shares a special recipe specifically for this week in the church year. Check it out below.

At Calvary this Advent, there is so much in which we may, “Rejoice!”

Sharing from an Online Cooking Group, revised for the Episcopal tradition:
The last Sunday before Advent is ‘Stir-up Sunday’, the day when traditionally families gather together to prepare the Christmas pudding.

The day does not actually get its name from ‘stirring the pudding’: it gets its name from the Book of Common Prayer. The Collect of the Day for the Third Sunday of Advent starts, Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come
among us...”.

However since Victorian times it has become associated with the rather lovely family custom of preparing for Christmas together by making the Christmas pudding, an essential part of most British Christmas dinners.

On Stir-Up Sunday, families gather together to mix the pudding. Each member of the family takes a turn in stirring the mixture whilst making a wish. The pudding should be stirred from east to west, in honour of the Magi (Wise Men) who came from the east to visit the baby Jesus. It’s also a good excuse to enjoy a wee dram or a cup of festive mulled wine!

African Team Ministry Gift Sales

Calvary Youth Group took over hosting African Team Ministries three years ago, but we have enjoyed their jewelry and gifts for many years. Your purchase from their website helps African Team Ministries send drip irrigation kits to countries in East Africa. Please continue to support African Team Ministries and the work they do. The Youth Group donated $250 to support African Team Ministries.
