Four New Postdoctorate Fellows Join CTCRE

This month, CTCRE is thrilled to welcome four new postdoctoral fellows to the fellowship program and to celebrate the achievements of a departing fellow.

Giovanni Appolon, PhD, RRT, Praveena Fernes, PhD, Alex Matias, PhD, and Julia West, PhD, each bring unique expertise, fresh perspectives, and a deep commitment to careers in tobacco research. Their work will span a range of topics, including tobacco-related health disparities, intersecting toxic exposures, the co-use of multiple tobacco products and other substances, industry marketing and policy impacts, and the cardiovascular effects of tobacco, nicotine, cannabis, and emerging aerosol exposures.

One Fellowship Farewell

We also bid farewell and extend our congratulations to Divine Darlington Logo, PhD, as he concludes his time at CTCRE as a Postdoctoral Scholar. During his two years at the center, Dr. Logo focused on cessation strategies and policies to integrate smoking cessation models into primary health services in Ghana, while also strengthening his skills in document research to better understand industry interference in developing countries.

Center Updates

  • In case you missed it: CTCRE recently published a special edition newsletter highlighting how UCSF tobacco programs are advancing education across research, provider training, clinical care, and community partnerships.

The Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center, and the Fontana Tobacco Treatment Center each bring distinct expertise to tobacco control. Together, their work helps build the knowledge, skills, and systems needed to reduce tobacco-related disparities and expand access to effective tobacco treatment.

Read the special edition to learn more about how UCSF programs are working together to address tobacco use, the leading preventable cause of death worldwide.

  • The Industry Documents Library has a new Juul Labs Content Guide! With over 5 million files in the collection, it can be tough to know where to start a research project. To help with this, IDL's content experts and archivists broke out the most common research topics and outlined ways to get started. Topics include nicotine, youth prevention, community outreach, flavors, leaking pods, workplace vaping, sales practices, marketing and social media, and more.
