Debra's Purpose

“I can’t wait to be a role model. I’ve done the work and now it’s time for me to share my story.”

“I know I have a purpose. It is so clear to me now.” This was Debra’s first thought as she sat down to reflect on her time at Calvary Women’s Services. Debra’s journey at Calvary began after she lost her job of 9 years as a customer service representative. She describes herself as a shy introvert and never expected to like a job where she was constantly interacting with people, but she grew to thrive in that position. She won awards and the praise of her colleagues and supervisor and thought she had finally found the job she would be at until she retired. Just as Debra began to feel comfortable, there was a change in management, and she was let go.

Debra was skeptical of the process at Calvary during her first few weeks, but soon grew to depend on the structure and relationships with the other women and staff. “For the first time in my life, I had time to learn about myself because I had support and time to think.” She was ready to take back control of her life.

Celebrating the Success of Step Up DC

Step Up DC is Calvary's job placement program. Every year, participants spend hundreds of hours editing their resumes, sharpening their interview skills, and applying to jobs. With our ever advancing world, Step Up DC makes sure their technological literacy is up to date with our computer lab where they can apply to jobs, check their emails, and take online skills classes.

Step Up DC has had some great successes this past year. Nearly 2/3 of our participants secured a job with an average hourly wage of over $15! They are one step closer to ending their homelessness for good.

Volunteer Spotlight: SuperStars and Super Meals!

Pat is a regular volunteer here at Calvary. A few days a week, she comes in to work our front desk. Clients and visitors are always excited to see Pat's cheery face as soon as they walk in! Volunteers like Pat (and hopefully you!) are what make Calvary a welcoming and warm home. Thanks for beings a SuperStar, Pat!

Speaking of SuperStars, My Sisters My Friends (top) and the Junior League of Washington (bottom) came by to serve food during the Super Bowl. They got to watch the game, cheer, and bond with the women over a great game. Thanks for coming by!
