The Calvary Connection
February 2019
" No one ever told me that I had the power to change. At Calvary, I learned that I had to do the work myself, and I proved that I could!”- Loretta, former resident
Loretta's Story
“Every night I was a nervous wreck when I got back from work. I didn’t feel safe at all, in my own home.”

Loretta had moved away with her husband. She found a good job as a nurse’s aide at a hospice center. Things were going well until he became abusive. Loretta prayed that it was just a phase, but it only got worse.

Fed up with her husband’s violent behavior, she took the courageous step of returning to DC by herself. She tried to stay with friends and family, but moving around so much was difficult. Her housing instability combined with the recent trauma of her husband’s violence made it impossible to focus on the next steps.

Loretta was ready for a new direction. Thankfully she found Calvary.

Volunteer Spotlight: Stacy Sawin
Would you hike 20 miles a day for 4 months to end the cycle of homelessness for women in the DMV? Well, that is exactly what Stacy Sawin, an overnight volunteer at Calvary, has planned as she takes on hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) through California, Oregon and Washington State starting in March.

"It would be a dream come true for me to accomplish this life goal of mine while at the same time helping women at Calvary accomplish their goals.”

Get the full story on our website and learn more about Stacy's fundraising project for Calvary.
Cocktails for Calvary - Spring Edition
You're invited! Our next Cocktails for Calvary event will feature signature cocktails and delicious hors d'oeuvres at Baby Wale, a hip gastro-pub in DC's Mount Vernon Square. We’ll come together to celebrate women achieving their goals, and look forward to the coming warmer weather of spring.

This is a great opportunity to invite friends, family, coworkers, and other networks to learn more about Calvary’s mission and the women we serve. Be sure to bring a friend (or two!). Tickets are $25 each. You’ll also receive a discount when you purchase two or more tickets.
