Dana's Story

“ I never thought that I would be in this kind of situation, but when you love someone you make excuses.”

Before coming to Calvary Women's Services, Dana had been living with her partner for many years. She cared deeply for him, even when he occasionally lost his temper and became abusive.

His violent behavior began to worsen when he was laid off from his job. One night she was hospitalized with a severe concussion. As she lay in her hospital bed recovering from her injuries, she knew she had to do something. When Dana returned home, she gathered enough courage and strength to take her belongings and flee.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month . Last year, in an effort to provide a better understanding of the condition of homeless women in DC, we released the 2017 Women's Needs Assessment.

The report found that nearly one‐third of women indicate that violence is the cause of their homelessness or housing instability. The complete report and a summary are available for download on our website .

Be sure to watch our social media accounts this month as we'll continue to raise awareness about domestic violence issues, and share information about public events and ways you can get involved in making a difference for survivors of domestic abuse.

Volunteer Spotlight: Anna Rogers

Anna Rogers has had the unique opportunity to explore many volunteer roles at Calvary this year. She began as a front desk volunteer, answering phone calls and welcoming guests at our facility on Good Hope Road.

After finding the experience to be very rewarding, she applied for and received a summer internship with our education program. Read our interview with Anna to learn why she's so passionate about volunteering at Calvary.

Our Wish List for Calvary's New Housing Program

This fall, Calvary Women’s Services is growing. Over the next month, we will open up a new housing program called Reach Up, expanding our capacity by 80%.

As we prepare to open our doors to more women in our community, you can help us fill Calvary’s new home with comfortable furnishings and supplies that let women know they are home.

MAKE AN IMPACT

Generous Donation from DAVIS Construction

We are thrilled to receive a generous donation of more than $32,000 from Davis Construction in support of women working to overcome their homelessness.

The donation comes from DAVIS’s sixth annual charity golf tournament in which subcontractor and industry partners, along with the help of generous sponsors, raised over $65,000 for two nonprofit organizations. Learn more about this partnership on our website.

Giving Tuesday

Kick off the holiday season by helping us welcome more women home to Calvary. Join a global day of giving by hosting your own fundraiser, or plan to donate on Tuesday, December 3rd.
