The Calvary Connection
November 2018
"I finally feel like yes, there is a tomorrow." -Janet, a former resident at Calvary
Janet's Story
Janet always wanted the best for her family. When her mother’s health began to decline, Janet put her own life on hold. She gave up her job and moved in with her mother so that she could care for her full-time. “I was doing nothing for myself,” she recalls. It was physically exhausting and mentally draining.

When her mother passed away last year, it took a heavy emotional toll on Janet. “I couldn't believe she was gone. I always thought she would outlive me.” The loss was so traumatic that she could barely focus on anything else.

Unfortunately, she did not have time to process the grief. She was told by her mother’s housing facility that she had fourteen days to vacate the apartment. Amid the difficult loss of her mother, Janet was about to be homeless. She began to panic.

Luckily, one of her mother’s neighbors recommended she look into Calvary Women’s Services.

Volunteer Spotlight: Crystal Bailey
When Crystal Bailey received an inquiry from Calvary staff about facilitating an etiquette class for women experiencing homelessness, it was a request she couldn’t refuse. Since then, she has facilitated a variety of classes as part of our education program including professional development, networking, and fine dining etiquette training.

Tarriona "Tank" Ball Performs at Calvary
Tarriona "Tank" Ball, an award winning spoken word poet and front woman of the group Tank and the Bangas , took time out of her busy schedule to give an inspiring performance for women at Calvary.

Her songs and poetry stressed the importance of preparing for opportunities and practicing self-care. These ideas fit right into the core values of Calvary’s education program.

Read our blog post for a full account of the event.
