The Calvary Connection
May 2019
" During my time here I’ve become more comfortable being myself, and I have this feeling that I can do anything! ” - LaRonda, resident at Calvary
Through Creativity, LaRonda Found Confidence
LaRonda, a frequent participant in the life-skills and education program (LEAP) at Calvary Women’s Services , has spent the past 5 months falling in love with art.

Not only has she developed a newfound appreciation for famous sketches and paintings, but she has also discovered a passion for creating her own artwork.

The whole process of learning how to draw and paint has really helped me bring out my inner self and experience true relaxation .”
Read more about LaRonda's newfound passion for art, and how it has helped her become more comfortable with herself, on our blog. You'll also see more of LaRonda's original artwork!

Volunteer Spotlight: Stacey Stiner
Stacey Stiner is our spring Community Engagement intern at Calvary. She is currently finishing up her junior year at The George Washington University and studying public health with a double minor in psychology and business administration.

As the semester comes to a close and her internship finishes up, we wanted to sit down with Stacey and hear about her experiences at Calvary over the past few months. Find our full interview on our blog.
United Way's Do More 24
Help us kick off our expansion this summer and empower even more women to end their homelessness.

On May 22nd, Calvary will participate in Do More 24, a 24-hour online fundraising campaign hosted by United Way of the National Capital Area that benefits nonprofits in the DMV. We are looking for volunteers to promote the fundraiser online with their networks. For additional information on how to get started, contact David Lothamer.

Cocktails for Calvary - Summer Soiree
Join us at our next Cocktails for Calvary event on Thursday, June 13th from 6 to 8 PM at the rooftop lounge of Cava Mezze. Enjoy signature cocktails and classic Greek hors d'oeuvres while taking in the views of Capitol Hill. We’ll come together to support women overcoming homelessness and celebrate summer in the city.

This is a great opportunity to invite friends, family, coworkers, and other networks to learn more about Calvary’s mission and the women we serve. Be sure to bring a friend (or two!). Tickets are $25 each. You’ll also receive a discount when you purchase two or more tickets.
Spring Garden Rejuvenation
Our garden has been officially rejuvenated for spring and summer! Women at Calvary will be sharpening their gardening skills by tending to these beautiful new decorative plants and nutritious vegetables.

As the tomatoes, peppers, lettuce,
and other vegetable plants mature throughout the season, they will to yield a bountiful harvest of nourishing snacks.

The vegetables will also be used to supplement the ingredients in our daily meals. Last year, Calvary served over 20,000 warm, home-cooked meals to women. Adding homegrown vegetable from our own backyard to the recipes gives an added nutritious value. View more photos of the garden here.
