Redistricting Update

The Howard County Board of Education has revised Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) elementary and middle school attendance areas for the 2018-2019 school year. The adjustments are needed to populate new Elementary School #42, scheduled to open in Hanover in fall 2018, and to realign middle school feeder patterns in conjunction with the elementary attendance areas. The final decision was made during the Board's regularly scheduled meeting on November 16, 2017.

No high school redistricting will take place for the 2018-2019 school year; the next high school redistricting process will begin prior to the opening of new High School #13. The Board endorsed the JumpStart initiative to expand dual enrollment options for high school students. The expansion offers programmatic choices that provide students at overcrowded Centennial, Howard and Long Reach high schools the option to transfer to Oakland Mills or River Hill high schools. This expansion will more than double the number of HCPSS students taking advantage of dual enrollment opportunities through Howard Community College.

The changes approved by the Board are listed o n the BoardDocs website (November 16, 2017 meeting, Approval of Attendance Area Adjustment Plan).

A new School Locator and final Attendance Area Maps for the 2018-19 school year are now available.

JumpStart- Early College Program

A Partnership Between HCPSS and Howard Community College.
In the JumpStart Program, students will focus on preparing for college level courses while in high school in order to be better prepared for college/university upon graduation. At the end of their senior year at Oakland Mills, River Hill, Mount Hebron, Centennial, Long Reach, Howard, Atholton, Glenelg, Marriotts Ridge, Hammond, Reservoir, or Wilde Lake High School, students will graduate with 30 or more college credits! They will have the opportunity to continue at HCC or they can apply and go to the college/university of their choice.  If students apply to a college other than HCC, they will be able to transfer their HCC credits to the college/university of their choice. Most community college credits transfer to four-year institutions, but each college/university is different.

Purpose:  To engage in challenging courses to prepare for and take high school credit and college credit (dual-credit) courses beginning sophomore year in high school.

Reasoning: To build critical thinking skills, perseverance, and flexibility to be successful within the ever-changing landscape of our competitive, global society.

Cost:  As part of the JSP program, families will receive at least 50% off tuition. HCC's current billing is $138/credit.
