The Camp Kawartha Connection

June 2026

From the Executive Director:

As summer approaches, there is a growing sense of excitement here at Camp Kawartha. Summer Camp staff are beginning to gather once again in anticipation of another season of laughter, friendship, discovery, and connection to the outdoors.

At the same time, we are celebrating another incredible year of outdoor and environmental education, where thousands of students experienced the joy of learning beyond the classroom walls through forests, wetlands, meadows, and hands-on exploration. We are also deeply grateful for the support that has helped us move forward with our new accessible washrooms in the dining hall, an important step toward ensuring camp is welcoming and accessible to all.

Alongside this work, our Growing Nature Play initiative continues to inspire children and educators to rediscover the power of imagination, curiosity, and free play in nature through the simple beauty of sticks, stones, branches, and other loose parts from the natural world.

Together, these initiatives remind us of something important: when children are given meaningful opportunities to connect with nature and with one another, wonderful things begin to grow.

Thank you to all who came out for a great kickoff to the camp season!

Outdoor Education Season Finale

With the beginning of summer camp, comes the end of a fantastic Outdoor Education season! We had over 109 schools and over 4000 students come to Camp Kawartha between our site on Clear Lake and our Environment Centre from September to June. We want to thank all of the teachers, principals, superintendents, parents, parent volunteers, and students as well as our incredible outdoor education admin team, our educators, our food services team, maintenance department and housekeeping department for one of our best seasons yet! We could not do this without every single one of you.

We are taking bookings for the fall, especially team building for your new classes. If interested, reach out to our Registrar as soon as possible as these dates are already booking up.

Enhancing Accessibility, Transforming Lives

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to AON for sponsoring our accessible washroom renovation.

We were thrilled to host Donna Lynn Clarke from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming to tour the current construction of our new accessible washrooms which are partially funded by the The Enhancing Access to Spaces for Everyone (EASE) Grant.

The EASE Grant only covers a portion of this major capital project. If you are interested in contributing to building a camp that is fully accessible to all please consider donating to our Enhancing Accessibility, Transforming Lives campaign.

This project will be opening up accessibility for our youth but also an entirely new demographic. We are looking forward to the ability to host and accommodate blind and deaf students as well as seniors and Elders. Our goal with this project is to promote stewardship for all generations, and the ability to host multi-generational connection within Rotary Hall.

Growing Nature Play

Camp Kawartha is thrilled to announce that it is a recipient of a $41,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough - to encourage nature play in young children.

Growing Nature Play is invites children to engage more deeply with the natural world through imaginative, unstructured outdoor play using the organic “loose parts” of nature — sticks, stones, branches, pinecones, stumps, shells, and other natural materials that spark curiosity, creativity, movement, and wonder. The initiative helps adults see schoolyards, parks, and nearby green spaces not simply as places for recess, but as rich landscapes for exploration, relationship, and discovery. At its heart, the program is a gentle provocation: when children are given time, freedom, and meaningful opportunities to play in nature, connection and stewardship begin to grow naturally.

Thank you to everyone who completed our supporter survey sent out in April. We were able to receive some very helpful feedback from our community to be able to serve you best. We were disheartened to hear that the Ontario government has cut funding to 5 of the Toronto District School Board outdoor education centres. We stand with the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario in condemning these closures. For more information about please read COEO's statement.
