To Our Residential Communities,
In recent weeks, students and alumni have spoken clearly and courageously about their experiences with hate, harm, and silence in our residence halls. We hear you. We recognize the pain and distrust expressed in public statements and forums - and we take your experiences and this feedback seriously.
The acts of hate that have occurred within and around our residential communities are inexcusable. Racism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, ableism, and all forms of discrimination have no place on this campus or in our residence halls. Silence in the face of such harm causes real damage - and for any moment where our response has felt absent, unclear, or insufficient, we acknowledge that harm and commit to doing better.
We also want to name the growing sense of unease and distrust that has emerged—not only among students but within our own residential staff community. We are aware of circulating narratives that question the residential staff program and its role on campus. While this is difficult to hear, especially given the deep commitment many of our residential staff, students included, bring to this work, we understand how perceptions form when there isn’t space for reflection and dialogue. As leaders of and within our residential community, this is a moment for us all to lean in - with compassion, honesty, and responsibility.
We believe that dialogue is critical to healing, clarity, and growth. As part of that commitment, our Residential Experience office (De la Salle room 117) is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Specifically, our office will be open on Friday, May 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for anyone who would like to stop by to ask questions - whether general or specific - or to share thoughts about recent feedback. We are available to listen, clarify, and connect.
To every student who has lived in community with us this year: thank you. Whether through celebration or challenge, your presence has mattered. We wish you the best in these final weeks of the semester and look ahead to a new academic year where we commit to showing up with greater integrity, accountability, and care.
And as always, a reminder of your resources:
In community,

Moving out of your Residence Hall Room
To prepare for your check-out with Campus Housing or the Online Self Check-Out form, please make sure that your room is completely cleared of your belongings and follow the checklist below (to avoid improper checkout fees) before returning your room key.
| | |
Ready to Check-Out?
When you're ready to check-out, you will head down to the Campus Housing Office (Ground Floor of Augustine Hall). Between 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday, Campus Housing will be open to complete your check-out, collect your room key, and confirm you have completed all move-out items.
| | | |
Checking out after hours or during the weekend?
Students can utilize our Self Check-Out Form on the StarRez Housing Portal where they'll agree they have completed all move-out items and have dropped their room key (labeled) into the black metal key dropbox that is next to Campus Housing's office door. An additional email with an easy to use "magic link" for the self check-out form will be emailed to students prior to move-out week.

PMB Keys:
If you are graduating and/or not returning to live on campus for Fall 2025, please return your Private Mailbox (PMB) key to the campus Post Office prior to your check-out date. Please complete any necessary paperwork with them should you need your mail forwarded to a different, off campus mailing address.
*If you are returning to on-campus housing in the Fall, you can keep your PMB keys, but might need to temporarily provide a different mailing address for any summer shipments.
Also, please check with the campus post office if you have any leftover packages prior to May 23!

Campus Housing has received notification from the SMC Facilities Team that the Moraga Fire Marshall will be back on campus to check fire safety compliance in the residence halls. They will be accompanied by Facilities Services staff members and residents will be notified via email prior to their buildings inspection.
Here are some of general fire safety compliance guidelines:
• Discontinue use and remove extension cords & multi-tap adaptors (non-UL listed)
- Additionally, make sure surge protectors are not overloaded, and that extension cords are not being plugged into other extension cords
- Possible Solution: The surge protectors that can be used for non large appliances (refrigerators or microwaves) like cell phones etc. need to have a reset button or similar like below
• Remove candles and wax hot pots
• Remove non-battery decorative and string/holiday lighting
- Only battery powered string lights are permitted
• Ensure all fire safety equipment (smoke detectors, fire sprinklers, etc.) are not obstructed, covered, or have any items hanging from them
Thank you for your continued cooperation in ensuring SMC is fire safety compliant. We anticipate re-inspections a few weeks after the initial inspections to follow up on any violations they noted, but will re-notify the building when we are made aware of this. Campus Housing will be working with Facilities and the Fire Marshall post-inspections to assist with educating residents on fire safety requirements and areas of improvement.
